Centralized management of all configuration data

Centralized management of all configuration data

It would be nice to manage things like saved searches, grid settings and plug-ins through the Vault Settings window instead of copying files to each Vault user's computer.

Project Thunderdome is a good start, but I would like to go beyond Thunderdome.  It would be better if the app were easier to use and built into Vault.

Agreed. As a cad manager it would be nice to have quickly deployable settings for users of Vault.

Also favor the idea of being able to create different configurations for different user groups in vault.
Each team needs to see the data that is relevant to them and remove unnecessary clutter, so they can focus on what they need.

Each major release we have to go through and customize the view layout, columns, column sizing, toolbar options, properties palette, settings, vault prompts. etc.

@ihayesjr Any update on the status of this idea?

In mulit site and world wide environment is extremely timeconsuming not to have this in place. It would be great to have Autodesk aware this is your customers need attention to this kind of functionality. As we are working in different timezone`s all over the world and we have to ensure one click installation of preconfigured Autodesk software ready to use to ensure "no stop" in our design environment`s. Today, your customers spend way to much unnecessary work handling Vault Config`s to different environments in our business. So Autodesk, don`t put this behind the scene and show your large customers that you want to have Vault as the best PDM tool in the market. We are asking our self if it is, at the moment..

Greetings all.

Just to give you the comment also from our side.

Recently we upgraded from version 2020 to 2023.

Due to missing functionality "import / export", we wasted quite some time in testing environment to set up everything - all the settings, preferences, working folders, grids (and there are many many independent viewing windows), logins, searches, shortcuts, ... There are files for Vault Common, Vault Pro, Vault Add-Ins, ...

Not to mention we had to reset the testing working machines and test again and again to check if copy-paste of all setting files worked and connected properly, so we could deploy it on user PCs.

Another story.

Just recently, we installed version from Vault 2023.1.1 to 2023.2 for some testing users to test it. We figured out that some settings were reset (missing setting migration tool?!) due to "legacy" status and old settings (for version 2023) do not work anymore, so we will have to redo all the steps with setting up again, which is really time consuming and not rational...

Hope this will get solved in soon future. It would be great to have simple "import / export" tool and also the migration tools, since we will have old settings and new versions will have extra settings, so migration tool can combine them and we just set the difference.

Best regards,

Rene Repina

Hello all!

Thanks to @Markus.Koechl there is an updated version of Vault Thunderdome sample available also for 2023, on Ghithub.

@ReneRepina

We are performing batch-copies for the user settings in Vault (gridstate,...).

We created a exe file to save user settings to a network drive or in a directory in Vault (like Thunderdome is doing) and after update users can restore them with running a bat-file.

In your case "reset of configuration":

I think the problem is the "ApplicationPreferences.xml" file in user-directory %appdata%.

There were several complications in the past. You can restore your settings, delete the "ApplicationPreferences.xml" file and restart Vault client. Then all functions should be working.

We also have that, but before we could use it, we had to set it up.

Well between the versions, it could come into the collision with something (due to program changes and new features) or have "legacy" settings, causing problems or not?

We just updated and settings were reset, it worked after, but with default settings. There are 2 such files, but I think it is meant for Vault Pro not add-in.

If we just delete "ApplicationPreferences", the settings will be default, which we do not want. We will have to update, adjust the settings and do the settings again to be usable on others users.

11 Years and nothing changed!? Oh come on Autodesk. Please look at this.

We're using version 2022.

Infrequently user settings are getting reset (also with clean shutdown of autodesk products!). It's really annoying to deal with scripts to get it all back.

Didn't know about Thunderdome, looks interesting, will try that. But this should be builtin functionality of Vault.

This will be the third time this idea has been accepted. Fingers crossed it will be the one that gets implemented...

Agree!
And, hopefully Vault Configurations is involved in the case as making us able to sentralized distribute Grid state, predefines Search eg.

Hi @steinar_sorem @william @Gene.R @christoph.mueller3PR6L @ReneRepina @dominik.gleinser @vali_dobrea

@Redmond.D and all,

Thank you for keeping the conversation going. Right now, we are doing the research on this topic for the Vault Client Configuration related to admin setting default/start view of the desktop client interface and distribute to all working clients. For example, as you stated that you might want to enforce visibility of certain properties on the data table header based on the company standards and many more within builtin functionality of Vault.

We would hope to collect more insights and feedback from you to better make the functionality. Do bear with us while we work on these aspects.
