I'm not sure that this is the right place where this idea must be placed.
When you work with INVENTOR you are able to create a dynamic between a PART file and a STEP file by using the module ANYCAD. Then you can save the new file structure in VAULT PRO. In vault you will get the part file with a child file that is the STEP file. You are able to apply all document management rules that you wish on such file.
If another designer wants to create another part file that will use the same STEP file, you use the same process but he will navigate in the VAULT folder structure to get the STEP file. Unfortunately, in this case the STEP file will be opened and the full BOM will be imported and transformed in an INVENTOR assembly. The only would be to locally get the STEP file first and use the same process described above.
Would it be possible to get the same behavior in both way and to make them consistent whatever the method?
