Copy Design & Content Center (as custom)

Hello, when copying a design with Vault prof. (copy design), and the assembly contains content center parts (at least ones that are placed "as custom"), the custom content center parts are not copied.

When opening the new design, the custom content center parts, are still linked to the originals in the source folder.

So when changing size of those parts, the original gets modified too.

Is that normal behaviour?

In this example, there is 1 such a profile.

Yes, library models are Reused by default and they are not shown in the Copy Design dialog unless you turn on the view to see them.

How odd.  In our workflow, a custom CC part is not intended to be a library part, so it should behave as a normal part.

We don't see an issue with custom CC parts (structural steel shapes) not showing up in Copy Design.

Is this a setting we enabled years ago, or is there something that the OP can do to have custom CC parts treated as normal?  Or is it a behavior change between Vault 2020 and more recent versions?

@johan.degreef Are you clearing out the display name in the part browser before you copy-design?  By default, Inventor makes the display name of the copied part match the original part filename.  So 12345.ipt with a display name of 12345 will be copied to abcde.ipt with a display name of 12345.  It can lead to confusion because this behavior only applies to CC parts placed as custom.  Deleting the display name in the part browser and hitting enter resets the parts to have normal display name/filename behavior.

Hello.,

@swalton is correct here.

Can you please confirm if you are referring to Content center parts placed as custom ?

Asking this as the custom Content Center parts do show up in the copy design dialog by default and can participate in the copy design usually. (as these are more like normal parts and not library parts)

Normal content center parts are not seen in the copy design dialog by default and you need to turn on Library parts option to see them. (which is what Irvin suggested).

Let me change what I stated a little. Regardless of the part is a Content Center standard part or a custom part, any file found in a library folder will be Reused by default and will not appear unless you turn on the view of Library parts.

Library parts being Reused is not new. It has always been this way.

@ihayesjr @gandhey @swalton

So my CC parts (yellow category) are custom placed and they do appear in the copy design tool, but they are not copied. How come? And what do I have to do to get them copied as all other parts?

@ihayesjr

Here it is.

Only the problem profile comes from the content center, other square tubes are normal inventor parts.

So the file in question may have been generated from your custom Content Center library, it is not in a library folder in your Vault?

I am not seeing the same issue. Can you try to copy the part by itself?

@ihayesjr

Vault seems to copy the file in both cases (only copy the the file or copy the whole assembly)

but when opening the new assembly and you see the properties of that part it still referes to the source project.

The new file seems locked. icon means no local file - locked

The file is locked based on the category that it is being assigned to.

Guessing, your category for this file has a lifecycle definition that has the Released state as the default state.

Since the file is locked when it is created, another step that is needed as part of the Copy Design execution could not be completed.

Yes it is a CC part that has a simple lifecycle: WIP or Released.

All our CC parts are defaulted to released.

Is that a correct way?

There are multiple ways to work with "library" parts so the way you are working with them is not incorrect.

You need to work with your Autodesk Partner\Reseller to give you the best recommendations for your business process.

I guess our bussiness process is 99% the same as anyone elses.

Thank you. Setting the WIP state as default does solve the problem.

So I need to find a way to make those CC parts released in an automatic way, but not as default... but I want to avoid that I need to set new CC parts from WIP to Released evry time new files are created.

Setting CC parts Released as default was advized by an Autodesk representative:

He does not know your business processes and needs. Autodesk Partners\Resellers will set down with you and talk about all of the processes involved in your company and can give you the best recommendations and also could help you understand the pros and cons of what you are doing. You can't get that in one or multiple forum posts.

This at least works with us fine!

There should be another problem I think!
