Simulation Stopped Importing

Hello everyone,

I am running Inventor Pro 2013 along with Simulation Mechanical 2013.  I have been working with a modest sized/complexity assembly for several weeks now tweaking it in Inventor and analyzing it in Simulation Mechanical.  I ran an FEA last Friday without issue.  Yesterday, I made some changes to the asssembly and tried to "Launch Active Model" as usual.  Simulation starts, and some quick messages pop up in the status bar ("getting data" etc), but then it stops.  No error message, no freezing, nothing in Simulation.  I just get a blank Simulation window as if I just opened Simulation by itself and hadn't opened a file yet.  HOWEVER, Inventor freezes during this process.  I do not get an error, not even the "(not responding)" on the top bar of the Inventor Window, but nothing will respond.  I have to right click and close window in the taskbar to end Inventor.  As long as I don't try to send the model to Simulation, Inventor runs fine.

It is also worth noting that when I open Windows Task Manager, I see an "InvHost-Win-x64.exe" running with the description "Autodesk Inventor host session import assistant".  It appears when I "Launch Active Model" and when I try to open an Inventor file directly through Simulation rather than through the "Launch Active Model" in Inventor.

I appears Windows (I am running Windows 10, without major issue until now) installed an update over the weekend, so I rolled it back.  Did not help.

I then tried to import a simple, single part, thinking maybe my changes to the origonal assembly cause a problem.  Same behavior.

I then tried to open just Simulation and then open the Invenor assembly directly, rather than using the "Launch Active Model" command.  Same Behavior

I CAN successfully open the old simulation file and work with it, but of course it doesn't include the update model geometry.

Any ideas?  I am at a loss, but really need to get this FEA done.

Thanks!

Another bit of information that may or may not prove useful.

I was playing around with it today and it was exhibiting the same bahavior (opening Simulation and apparently starting the import process, but stopping).  I found "Autodesk Inventor host session import assistant" in the task manager and forced it to close.  At that point, nothing happened in Simulation, but Inventor became useable again.

I feel fairly confident the problem lies within the Autodesk Inventor host session import assistant, but I don't know how to fix it.  Reinstall Simulation?  Reinstall Inventor?

Hi dbcox,

One thing you can try is running regall.bat to register all of the DLL components of Simulation Mechanical. One thing to keep in mind is that we don't officially support Windows 10 with Simulation Mechanical yet. Going back to the 2013 version I don't recall that being validated to work on Windows 8.1, so the environment could be causing some problems as well.

Regards,

Andrew

Thanks for the information!  Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem.

What is so bizarre is it has been working fine since my Windows 10 upgrade (after I was able to get the licensing server worked out).  It just stopped one day and I cannot figure out why.

I am going to try a reinstall as soon as I can put my hands on the software DVD.  Maybe that will solve it.

Any other ideas before I uninstall and reinstall?

Some more information to throw into the mix:

I uninstalled Simulation and reinstalled today.  After installation, I tried to launch it again from Inventor.  I recieved the attached error.

I then tried installing SP2, and also ran reall.bat again.  After that, I tried again, and now I am back to where I was when I posted the question.

I can only think of two other options:

1.  Try to reinstall Inventor (since the "Autodesk Inventor host session import assistant" seems to be linked to the problem.  No idea if that was installed with Inventor or Simulation, but I've already reinstalled Simulation.

2.  Go back to Windows 7, which I hate to do, especially considering it was working fine for quite some time before this issue all of a sudden popped up.

Things like this are so frustrating. I am sure there is probably a simple fix, but figuring out what that is may take forever!

Sorry for the spelling errors.  I appears I am too late to edit my post.

I came back because I realized I forgot to attach the error.

Sorry for replying so much without responses yet, but as I continue working with this issue, I am trying to record everything I see in hopes it will help in the diagnosis.

This morning, after the re-install yesterday, the behavior is unchanged when "launching" the model from Inventor.  So I tried to open the *.iam directly in Simulation.  The message bar at the bottom says "Connecting to model translator, please wait..."  It has been like that for quite a while, and nothing seems to be happening, even when I look at the resource monitor in the task manager.

To see what would happen, I used the Task Manager to force the "Autodesk Inventor host session import assistant" to end, and the message went away, but nothing else happened.

I feel confident the import assistant is the issue, but I don't know how to uninstall and reinstall it.

Maybe that information will help.

Thanks again!

Andrew,

I have tried everything I can possibly think of (see my replies to the main post).

Finally, over the weekend, I decided to just wipe the computer completely and go back to Windows 7.  I did and have now re-installed everything.  The problem persists!  Even with Windows 7!  I formatted the drive, including partitions to wipe out any chance of a remnant of Windows 10 causing a problem!

I tried the regall option after the complete re-install, but it didn't work.  I've also downloaded the latest and greatest updates from Autodesk.

I am now truly desperate.  I have this very expensive software that isn't working and I need it badly for a project I am working on.

Thanks!

No real problem or solution found.  I redid the fem model by deleting and starting over.  So far so good.  I did finally get in touch with Tech Support.  They said corrupt files are rare, but of course not impossible.  That's the only thing we can think of that would have caused it.  I wish I had had an error message or something so I wouldn't have wiped the machine... twice...
