Finding center of gravity

In AutoCAD when I needed to find the center of gravity for a shape I would create a region of the shape and use the mass properties to find the C.G.  is there any way to find the center of gravity for a shape in Revit?

Where do you get this COG:COG appear in family types from? I have no such thing.

It should work with generic models "Solids" if it doesn't let me know but with regards to weight I could potentially have it use densities to calculate the CG when you have solids with different densities together. Is this what your asking for? It is possible so I will work on it and see where I get.

Thanks,

Daniel

Daniel,
All of our custom families are generic models due to the flexibility we
need to do it that way. They are modeled as a solid, but the weight is the
most important factor for us. We have weights assigned to everything due to
crane operation lifting, and loads it applies to the floor slab. I was kind
of hoping that it could possibly work with the weights so we would not have
to do a lot of changes to our families.

Thank you,
Brad

I see, would you be able to Dropbox me a model with these families in it? I would love to look further into it. It is definitely possible I just have to look at it.

Thanks,

Daniel

Yes, this is what exactly I'm also looking for, calculate COG based on weight, it doesn't make sense if it calculates only based on mass

Can you send me your email or something I can send you a file with weights in it?

Thank you,

Brad

I am the original poster on this tread and have been using an add-in from Swanson Labs called "CG Finder Revit Add-in" that has been working very well.  They are available on the AutoDesk App store for versions 2017 and newer.

Thank you very much for sharing the CofG dynamo code.

I have been using it for a while now, however, sometimes it works and sometimes it gives me an error.

I mainly use it on generic models that I have modelled-up.

Please see image attached for the error.

Although the script is spectacularly awesome, it has its own limitation

1. It only calculates per element CG

2. It is not applicable for linked model

3. It leaves unselectable transparent yellow element

Hello,

How you found center of gravity of model components in Autocad from Revit as there is no direct option to get COG in revit?

Please reply..

Does anybody know if there's a 2021 version of the CG Finder mentioned in this thread? I've used the older versions and found it very useful but can't find a 2021 version.

I'm looking to find the CG base on weights, I have multiple materials and equipment on a build that I need the CG.

I did a search for where the cg finder was located and duplicated the whole folder to to the same place with the the name changed to C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\CG Finder 2021.bundle.

I then opened every file in the folder and did a "find / replace" to find every reference of "2020" and replaced it with "2021".

Works perfectly.
