View References in text

View References in text

It is quite common to have general notes or even a text object with a leader that says something like "FOR WIDGET TYPE A, SEE DTL 1, SHT A-101".  But to do this I currently have to either place my text and leave whitespace where I'll come back later and place a separate view reference OR type in the view reference by hand which will require that I manually update it if the view and/or change gets renumbered.

Please allow me to insert a view reference into my text objects.

I'm envisioning something similar to FIELDS in AutoCAD.

I can't believe this idea has not being implemented as yet.

If you ever used a VIEW REFERENCE this idea definitely must've come across your mind.

We use this in AutoCAD with Fields. It's a shame Revit doesn't allow you to do something like that.

Please Autodesk make it happen!

Are there any updates on this? This would fix a ton of the silly work-arounds that we have to use within our drawing sets that make it harder to read for the General Contractor.

Nothing that I'm aware of. There are so many ideas to consider by the dev
team I'm not surprised that it feels like nothing ever progresses. I think
the best way to influence the dev process is to join the beta test and try
to lobby them directly through discussion of the features that are being
actively worked on.

I'm trying to do that but not very successfully as I just don't have the
time required for full participation.

Hi!

In our legends it's common to hyperlink to other drawings and documents.
Would be neat if you could add view references (hyperlinks) in the legend texts.

Right now we have to manually update our legends when sheet numbers and names changes.

This can be useful in many ways, not just legends (temp. text notes for drawings etc.)

Thanks in advance!

So the view reference family is a great feature, but it would be even better if it can also somehow be included within a text box and/or a generic annotation such as a construction note tag so that it will travel with the text/note if it has to be moved in your note schedule for some reason, or if a detail changes numbers/sheets you won't have to remember to change a typed detail number in every text/note reference you've mentioned that detail in.

AutoCAD had a feature like this where you would type a note within a text box, insert a "field" before finishing the text box, and a link option would present itself where you could then link the "field" text to a detail within your documents.

Sample note would be: "Provide metal flashing at masonry infill. Refer to detail 8/A501." The 8/A501 would actually be linked much like an elevation or section marker so that if this detail moves up or down in number, it would be updated automatically in the text/note.

Currently, I perform this action by leaving enough space between words in my text box or generic annotation and just bring the current view reference family to the void space. This works, but it would be great to make it part of the text box and/or generic annotation.

I've also asked for this feature! Glad someone else has a similar request! AutoCAD had a feature to do this by way of inserting a "field", which I suppose would be easy to do in Revit as well. The challenge being, how do you get that to work in an annotation family like a construction note?

I'm posting to this comment in hopes to bring more attention to this!

Literally came to the ideas to post this exact feature, and this was the first thing I see.

For me, I would like the "view reference" label to be able to be added to my tags, material - wall etc so that I can reference them better.

I always need to tag and then below it have the view reference as a separate tag below. So annoying.

There is a growing number of variations on this idea. I suggested a super-set of this a while ago. It would ensure that we can do what you're asking for and so much more. Please take a look https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/make-substitution-variables-available-everywhere-where-te...

If you want to do this right now, there's a add-in (paid) that includes this tool called "Workflow" by a company called Revolution Design that you should check out. It's solves the problem (for now) and it's not that expensive.  https://revolutiondesign.biz/

Workflow by revolution design... But it should be native.

You'll need to pay for it.

Please in your next update, figure out how to insert the view reference tag into the text box so that when you add or delete text the tags move with the text. Very annoying if there are multiple references sitting on top of text box that you have to manually move and align with the text every time you edit the text.

This is a nice feature in that REVIT programers should look into finding a way to link view references with text box or tags.   The part i did not agree with was that for every tag one has to update manually the sheet and detail info on a view reference.  Currently this has not been the case, those do update automatically as one updates the view name, etc.  Finding a way to incorporate view references so that they link to tags and text boxes would be more organized and time saver in REVIT.

VIEW REFERENCES ARE ALMOST ALWAYS INCLUDED IN A LINE OR BODY OF TEXT.  CURRENTLY THIS PROCESS IS QUITE CRUDE, AND GIVES INCONSISTENT TEXT SPACING AND ALIGNMENT RESULTS. THE FUNCTION THAT I IMAGINE WOULD HAVE THE USER (WHILE THE TEXT EDITOR IS ACTIVE) RIGHT-CLICK AND SELECT "INSERT VIEW REFERENCE" (OR PERHAPS TYPE [CTRL] R) TO ACTIVATE THE VIEW REFERENCE INSERTION TOOL.

We definitely need to put them into schedules and also be able to put them in text. Leaving .      .   to give a space for references is good, but in general structural notes that are pages long, if one paragraph gets deleted then you have to move all of the references manually.  Autodesk should look into both situations as they would both be beneficial.

Our office came up with a decent workaround for referencing details in schedules. It's not as good as if we could just associate the family parameter with a detail view reference, but still. And, bonus! The workaround allows you to quickly populate the schedule with copy and paste, and revisions to the schedule result in obvious failure.

So the workaround is - use a legend overlaid on the schedule. Place the classic View Reference family in the legend view and copy and paste until the schedule appears populated. So far this has worked well for our office.

For schedules and tables, that work-around does sound like a creative solution, but for us the bulk of our View References are on plan and in details, where we'll have a text note that says something like...

[CAST IN PLACE CONCRETE WALL, SEE 12/S-301 FOR REINFORCING]

And of course you're having to zoom in to a level that you can see each pixel to ensure that it's aligned correctly, so it doesn't look unprofessional, and of course it doesn't text-wrap with the rest of the note so placement is rarely simple or clean.

Oh yeah, we have that issue too. And I’m not saying this thread is moot. Just wanted to share something that kinda worked in case it helps anyone else!

On the contrary, the wonkiness of the workaround demonstrates the need for this feature!
