Rethink Hatch / Fill Patterns

Isn't it time to devise something a little more modern for patterns? Hard to believe that the 35 year-old PAT file format is still the "technology" of choice for this. Would love to see a modern pattern creator that could do any kind of pattern. Including: rectilinear, random, and especially radial. It is just silly that we have to use model lines and arrays or material hacks to simple brick arches or radial floor patterns. 

A new pattern technology and editor please...

I have faced the issue to make a pat file in AutoCAD since it is a bit complex that each time you to create a pat file in AutoCAD then import it to Revit in order to get the pattern in Revit.

It will be really helpful if we could directly make a custom pattern in Revit instead of exporting the pat file which is extracted from AutoCAD and repeating the same process for creating new custom patterns.

Personally I have faced this issue in 2 of the projects I have worked on, where I have to find the complex algorithm to save the pattern made in AutoCAD as .pat file format then load it into AutoCAD, make the pattern and finally importing the new pattern into Revit.

It would be efficient to make the pattern directly in Revit and less time consuming.

Hope it can be resolved.

I agree that this should be a built-in Revit function.

It has a tool that lets you graphically draw a pattern, and then creates a Fill Pattern from your lines.

I believe this has come up a number of times already in the ideas forum. I think it might b better to support one which has already started gathering support to show it's popularity.

There's always a response to "try PyRevit" too 🙂

@awasyliw  I believe that there is always an alternate solution in Revit, but it is better to have the solution which is less time consuming and can be achieved in Revit instead of using 'add-ins' where not required.

For example- There is 'dynamo' but still we have engineers and architects using Revit and doing the modeling and documentation manually as per their requirements.

Ideas forum is for ideas which an individual or a group of individual think should be implemented in the new updates of Revit, I am sorry but I searched already and was not able to find any idea like this before, I  would appreciate if you share the link with me in which you have seen the same.

 I completely agree that Revit should have its own built in hatch pattern creator and not require a plugin... I've said as much on other idea requests for this 😉

On that note a very simple search for "revit custom fill" in the search box above returns over 216 results...

In Revit it would be very good if hatches can be created internally in Revit. Until now an AutoCAD .pat file has to be used.

I am with you on this one Michael, a hatch generator has been missing for years now.  Nothing worse than hunting around for a specific hatch/pattern file.

It would be great if we could use Dynamo for creating hatch patterns for Revit.  Just imagine how complex those patterns would be! We could control all aspects of it: color, lineweight, scale (uniform/non-uniform), rotation, mirroring, twisting, swirling, etc.

What i'm trying to imply is adaptive patterns. . It would be definitely faster than creating entire curtain walls , at least for the conceptual phase of the project.

I agree it should be part of the Revit installation as it was back in 2013.

This improvement is one of those we should'nt have to ask for so much it seems indispensable.
luckily waiting for the pyrevit plugin to easily create hatching and exploit them.
