The newly added the Path of Travel tool has a lot of potential but in its current form there is not much use for it in an architecture firm.
High priority improvements:
Add the ability toggle orthogonal and organic paths through a type parameter.
Add the ability to change a single endpoint of the path, not just moving the entire path or redrawing.
Add yes/no door parameter for egress (similar to room bounding for walls). When a door is placed it can be used for egress until the option is unchecked. This would be very helpful for avoiding the path of travel going through overhead and sliding doors.
Allow for small grade changes. Many egress paths involve ramps and/or a few stairs to meet grade.
Adjustable buffer zone. Typically a path of travel needs to be kept away from walls or other obstacles a certain distance.
Low priority improvements:
Modify end point symbols.
Allow for large grade changes - or be able to tie multiple paths together. While doing exiting diagrams for multistory spaces (lofted apartments, penthouses, or mezzanines) it would be optimal to have a single path versus having two and adding them.
I am so happy this tool finally exists but agree that it needs to be developed further.
A manual override of the path would be very helpful. The problem I am currently experiencing is a door with a side lite. Because the side lite is part of the door family, Revit sees the whole family as an opening in the wall so my path of travel is going straight through the side lite rather than the door because that is the shortest distance.
It seems like the simplest way to combat this would be to allow multiple waypoints.
Let the user pick the start point and endpoint
let Revit do its thing,
then let the user add waypoints as needed to manipulate the path to a more logical form.
Totally agree. In its current state the path of travel function is a cool proof-of-concept but not useful for much day-to-day work.
I would also add that it is very common to show egress paths that span two floors (i.e. the start point in a room on the second floor and the end point at a first floor exterior door).
I also agree with the potential of this tool, but in order to produce the set of sheets I'd like to see more features (like the ones you listed).
- Ability to represent different travel distances (with different family types and customisable simbology) would be great (i.e., differenciate between "common path of travel", "dead end corridor" or "exit access distance".
- Ability to check clearance zones along the egress path.
We have a condition where there is a mezzanine and the path of travel needs to go down a set of stairs to the level below the mezzanine, through a door and down another set of stairs to the exit on the lower level. The path of travel tool is not working for this condition. Stairs and ramps should be considered like doors in calculating the path (and multiple levels should also be included in the calculation - in other words, the ability to egress through a door on a lower level than the one the view is associated with).
In addition to the already stated request. As anyone else noticed that you cannot edit the type for Path of Travel? This is important because in reality you need two types of path of travels, one for overall travel distance and another for common path of travel. Current work around is to swap out line styles but this has to be done manually and requires a long workaround to get the two in a schedule separately. I was hoping Revit 2022 would change this but not so.
Full-Auto Update Function At this time, to update the path of travel, there are only few ways to make it happen including select the path of travel line and manually press ‘Update’ and change the start point/end point for path re-calculation. But, the practical situation is, design change is always producing the change of model elements rather than path of travel, we need a tool that it will follow the model change and auto-update the path when the model is keep changing.
Workability of Dimension For the statutory submission, dimension is a functional tool to be used commonly to tag the length of travel distance and other information due to statutory requirement. At this moment, we can’t apply the angular dimension for path of travel to present the degree between two separated travel directions. I hope it will be solved in the future version of Revit.
I agree that Path of Travel needs to accomodate stairs. I would like to see this upgrade. Surely it is relatively straight forward to include a separate parameter for travel time down stairs (i.e. X metres @ A speed, then Y metres (stairs) @ B speed. This is a clearly a critical factor for calculating fire exit times / distances.
I would also like to see the option to change the size and graphics of the start, middle, and end point symbols. Adding an arrow to the middle symbol would be particularly important.
