Integrating DataExchange into the “Insert” Tab

Integrating DataExchange into the “Insert” Tab

Currently, DataExchange is provided as a separate plugin, which makes managing linked DataExchanges more difficult.
The user experience could be significantly improved if DataExchange were integrated directly into Revit’s Insert tab — similar to existing linking functions such as Link Revit, Link IFC, or Link CAD.

Revit users are accustomed to managing the visibility of linked files through the VV command.
Integrating DataExchange into this familiar workflow would greatly increase user acceptance and ease of use.

@sait.tan I wonder what scenario makes you need to control a DataExchange's value visibility and what you currently 'insert' into Revit. The DataExchange has been there in all Revit version I have had to use through the years with varying degrees of actually working at all to resulting in an instant app crash. This may be down to the version or versions of installed office products but I would love to see this seen to by the developers to working properly out of the box. Allowing an import report from csv or txt as a counterpart to a report export would be useful. This I would search for on the insert tab.

We use Data Exchange instead of IFC because linking IFC files to Revit often causes various issues. When we link a Data Exchange, we also want to control the visibility of the linked elements in certain views — just like we can do with IFC or DWG links.

In our projects, for example, we usually have separate views for new construction, demolition work, and existing building conditions.

The ability to customize the visibility of Data Exchange elements per view would help us use the feature more effectively and keep our Revit views clear and relevant for each project phase.
