Family Parameter to have Sublists

Family Parameter to have Sublists

I know there's "Shared Parameter" and "Group parameter under:" to organize parameters. The idea is to make parameters as Sublist, just like in "Project Browser". It's just the way of well organised.

Imagine if you want to make parametric chair. The arm, leg, step, seat, etc. Each elements has its own dimension to set (width, height, length...). Then there's gonna be lots of parameters. But if we just can sublist of parameter. It's very easy to visually see.

Dimensions

Width: xxx

Height: xxx

Depth: xxx

Other

[-] Arm Visible [Yes/No]

    - Arm Width: xxx

    - Arm Height: xxx

    - Arm Material: xxx

    - Arm Thickness:...

[-] Back [Yes/No]

    - Back Width:xxx

    - Back Height: xxx

Lots of product have a pre-defined list of values that each parameter can be, it would be good if these could be defined as a list in the family so that only those values and be used in the project.

Example

A profiled metal sheet can be used on

  1. A Roof - value ROOF
  2. A Wall - value WALL
  3. A Parapet Upstand - value PARAPET
  4. A Soffit - value SOFFIT
  5. Other use - value OTHER

The value drop down should only contain these values, we currently achieve this by having an integer called Application Selector and a parameter called Panel Application which uses an if statement formula taking the Application Selector vaule to return ROOF, WALL, etc. it works but it is quite hard to explain to the user what is going on, the tool tip helps. The application is needed for scheduling and delivery phasing purposes.

It would be great to select one parameters and have others turn off at the same time.

Good idea.

There is a very similar topic already posted (if you make a little bit of a leap in reasoning).  Basically the idea is to be able to "pre-define" approved values for fields within families.  Your request is a specific implementation of this generic request.

Somebody gave me the link to this idea, because my idea is very similair.

My idea of family type parameters in Revit, see link below

This actually applies to all parameters (also length, int, ...)

  • For length/integer/number/angle one should be able to set a list but also minumum and/or maximum
  • For text choose from a predefined list
  • For <family Type> choose from a predefined list

This would be a great addition!

Given how often this comes up in the forums I'm suprised it doesn't have more votes.

A different way of describing it would be if you have 3 parameters and you select 1 of them the other 2 switch off automatically.

This would be very useful.

Hey Dazza and Pieter,

thx for the comments. I definitely agree with your posts. It would be awesome to choose values also within some fomulas.

Hopefully Autodesk implements it this time...

It would also be good if we could create lists min/max values and incremnts for length parameters. like we can with dynamic blocks in AutoCAD.

Handy for many reasons, critical for <family type> parameters that don't have other options for limiting For family types limiting by keynote, assembly code or omniclass could work well.

One of the places I find myself limiting most often with additional parameters is arrays, so that they only hide, instead of breaking when the required number drops to 1.

@dplumb_BWBR thanks for the link, not sure why I didn't find that one, spent some time searching as I was sure it would have come up, either the search facility is even more useless than i thought it to be or I was half asleep at the time.

Can moderators alter a post so that it just directs people locating it to the duplicate post to prevent the spread of votes?, would be ideal if this post could be changed to a comment on the other one and the voters here either transferred OR notified of the change and encouraged to up-vote the other post.

@lionel.kai thanks for your links - very useful I have up-voted some that I had missed that i thought were valuable.
