Full dark theme

Full dark theme

Revit currently only has the ability through Options>Graphics to change the color of the background which in a small way allows for reduced eye strain but it leaves the browsers etc in white so it is only a part solution.,

as Autodesk did very well with AutoCAD. Thanks for consideration

Hello, everyone!

This feature is active on our Revit Public Roadmap. If you are a part of our Revit Preview Release (beta), you can now TEST and PROVIDE FEEDBACK on this and several other features in development. Please note that while in development, this is no indication that any of the features will for certain be included in a future release, and we certainly cannot answer the question of "when will it be available?".

To join the Revit Preview Release, please email [email protected].

Happy Testing!

For those out there struggling with the inability to have a dark theme in Revit (like me), the post below is the closest I could get to a dark theme (thanks Luke Johnson!). There are even Windows shortcuts to switch it on/off. The only downside is that it inverts all colours in the drawing area, which may not go well with what you are working on but until Autodesk implements the feature properly that's the best I could find.

https://wrw.is/get-inverted-user-interface-colours-revit/

It takes advantage of the Windows Magnifier tool and the "invert colours" function.

This is the "before".

And this is the "after" just by using the shortcut Windows logo and the + key together.

This may have been brought up in the 7 pages of previous comments but I'll add a thought.  I have an eye disease called NAION which affects both of my eyes.  The biggest impact is blindspots in my visual field, but another consequence is dealing with contrast and the bright white screens of computers.   I'm fortunate enough to have retained enough of my vision to be able to continue to work in the architecture profession.  Fortunately, almost all programs we use have dark mode.  Even google has a hidden feature that allows websites to be turned into dark mode.  The one remaining program that causes me issues due to the bright white headers and the bright white browser and property menus, is Revit.  It would be a HUGE help for Revit to make this switch to a full dark mode.

Revit is overdue for a full dark theme. I hope we can get it soon.

One thing I’d like to add is that I know you can change the background to be any color, but it would be nice with a dark mode if the sheets remained white, so you can view them as they will be printed. If not, a quick toggle button that lives directly in the view tray would be nice. I used to have the bkground dark but it was easier to make sure it all looked correct on a sheet in white, especially if your using fills and gray tones.

Dark mode for properties and project browser would be great the white text on black background is much easier on the eyes!! I vote FULL DARK MODE THEME PLEASE!!!

Please implement this!

See Rhino for a perfect example of how to implement this.

Rhino + Visual Arq is becoming more and more likely as a replacement for Revit...

Absolute joke that this is 4 years old

Just a reminder. This item has been open for a bit. But I would direct people to the public roadmap @ https://trello.com/b/ldRXK9Gw/revit-public-roadmap as under "For Everyone" there is an item indicating this is being worked on.

Thank you, @smichaudN26PG , for sharing the Roadmap link for this Accepted Idea! I would also like to remind everyone that many features currently in development are available for testing in our Revit Preview Release (beta). Email [email protected] to be added to the Preview (beta) forum.

I vote for that too, how many people need to express this desire ?

@tlagardeAJBTA please refer to the other posts. This idea has been accepted and is in progress as seen here at the public roadmap: https://trello.com/b/ldRXK9Gw/revit-public-roadmap

Or as Kimberly has provided the Revit Preview link to test the feature for the future Revit release.

Very low priority update in my humble opinion. I would rather the developers focus on more key weaknesses with Revit (too many to list in this post)

But as a starting point:

Legends, Site Tools, Coordinate Schedules, and better modelling tools are things I would like to see.

Many other things I could add, like get contours to label correctly, like they used to do until it got 'fixed' (read broken in the 2023 release!)

Maybe this is a low hanging fruit, its a non vote from me I'm afraid. Can we focus on more key areas that aid production in future please. IE. Substance over style

EDIT: just noticed some comments from people with eye conditions. OK fair enough point taken, but doesn't just dimming the light emission on screen help at all? Modern screens are so much better and less eye straining than the old tech we had to work with last century!

Thank you for implementing this, will it be distributed to all previous versions or just Revit 2024 ?

@tlagardeAJBTA ,

This has not been implemented. It is currently on our roadmap. We cannot comment on when something will be implemented or specific releases.

need a proper dark theme!

Great to see this has been accepted. Looking forward to dark tool menus! I hope they allow flexibility of applying dark backgrounds to views and sheets.

Ideally, I'd like the ability for sheets to stay white and views black, similar to what can be done in AutoCAD. Even better, apply black to specific views.

so insensitive in part of Autodesk

Yes, it's 2022 and we are still here asking for the impossible - for Autodesk to task a junior coder with changing the project browser and properties windows background to black and text to grey... virtually impossible.

.. and don't get me started with more sensible project browser with Tabs instead of the 'tree' structure...

Autodesk are dinosarus - too big and destined for extinction.

Good point, the project browser could Dow with an update, they need all the sections to be able to be spit out into separate tabs rather than infinite scrolling between sheets, views, schedules etc.

Surely that can be implemented at the same time as dark theme!
