Fix Revit 2024 2025 Auto Expand Behavior for sheet content

Everyone else seems to be asking the same question in office/online and no-one has found a solution to it so here is my idea

For Revit 2024 & 2025 we need a hotfix to remove or amend a particular project browser behavior. The behavior we would like removed is the automatic expanding of sheets (on view placement to sheet) or amended to at least give our end users the option to disable this feature. 

This feature causes more harm than good and it gets worse when you have hundreds of sheets all expanding upon view placement. For us we simply don't need or want Revit to do that. The "collapse all" or the minus is not really a suitable workaround as there can be a huge handful of views to a single sheet and be spinning our scroll buttons forever trying to get back up to where we need to be.

With the newest update the plus sign (+) shows all of the views shown on a sheet within the project browser, which is a nice feature, but it is annoying that it expands whenever a change is made to the sheet and stays open even if you close out of the sheet in question.

There's the request I was looking for.  As someone who usually works in sheet views, with all sheets collapsed so that the PB only shows the list of sheets (not the views under each sheet), it is super annoying to have the sheet expand out every time I add a view to the sheet.  A setting to disable this, either in Options or via the INI file, would be much appreciated.

Also was hoping that it had some more votes at this point.

I agree, it should not expand as a default behavior as it makes the list too long and wastes needless time collapsing it all the time.

Please have an option to turn on or off automatic drop downs of placed views on sheets. Although you can collapse them, they automatically drop down again whenever you place another view on the sheet. It creates too much clutter. Please add that option.

I'll sign on to this as well.  It's quite annoying and frankly I don't see any reason for the feature.  Does anyone regularly use the drop-down views on the sheets?

Alas...sadly in V2026 this was not addressed...it is so annoying to have the sheet views show every time you add a view to the sheet.

However, we would also like to understand your needs better regarding the drag-and-drop action between sheets:

If the auto-expand feature is disabled, what is your expectation when dragging and dropping an item from one sheet node to another? Should the target sheet node automatically expand or remain collapsed?

Hi - I do not drag views from sheet to sheet, so this behavior would not affect my workflow. I only drag a view onto a sheet and never from sheet to sheet.

Just speaking personally for me and my team, not once have we ever dragged a view from sheet to sheet.

I do use the function of dragging a view from one sheet node to another as a way to align views, crop boxes, level head extensions, etc. however, I would love the option to toggle on/off the auto-expand on the target sheet. This will also help when duplicating sheets with Sheet Detailing. I know what will be on the new sheet and don't need to see it expanded.

Glad to hear this is in the roadmap! I hope to see it in 2026 with the other good quality of life changes.

I think when you drag a view from 1 sheet to another, it SHOULD auto expand. It's 50/50, but I like the auto expand, so you know where it went. You might accidentally move it to the wrong sheet.

@quentin.liuKTNCC  We feel it should remain closed but also that this should be a options setting folks can toggle. When you work on big projects this feature can be a real pain. If we needed it open we can expand as required. Remaining closed has been the way since the feature came to be and is valued by a lot of folks cince 2008.

This is now available in Revit 2027! Thanks to everyone who contributed feedback - this directly influenced the feature.

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones  That is great that this has been implemented into Revit 2027, but what about adding this to older versions? My project lifecycle is multiple years, and I am tied to whatever version the project team is on. Very rarely in the last 15 years have I had a project upgrade to the latest version while in the field.  I currently still have projects in Revit 2024 and have not even installed Revit 2026 yet.  Please add this to ALL active versions that are available on subscription.
