Family Replacement Behaviour - keep parameter values

Family Replacement Behaviour - keep parameter values

When replacing a family, all parameters that already existed in the old family should maintain their values. (when the parameter name is the same)

Maybe you don't always want this, so it could be an option?

I usually use project parameters to control globally, for example, the dimensions of the windows profiles and their sills across different families and types in the project, so that if they ever change I only need to change the value in one place instead of in all the endless variants of the windows.

The thing is, every time I duplicate a family type, the new type losses the project parameters links.

It would be tremendously useful if those were to be kept (or a question to keep or lose them would appear, and we could choose).

Please implement this ASAP!

We also need to be able to assign global parameters to each existing family type for the entire family all at once.

Congrats! We think this is a great idea, so we've decided to add it to our roadmap. Thanks for the suggestion!

In addition it would be nice to copy all instance values to another family of the same type with one click

"Accepted" in 2022 AND in 2025? That doesn't give much hope for it being implemented any time soon...

It's funny that I just happened to see this post, as I was here for a completely different reason - to request a fix of a departure from Revit standard nomenclature (extension vs offset: Stairs - fix name or behavior of "Extend Below Riser Base") while also working on this very problem:

pyRevit has a tool called "Change element type safely" (on Modify panel, Edit pulldown) which accomplishes the same task, but it's a little clunky. I'm in the process of modifying that tool to automatically fix the duplicate families and types that get created when inserting views (which we do a lot of):

But we really should be able to just "select all instances" and then pick a different type & family without resetting parameters (while having a "reset to defaults" as an option).

I've also come across several projects that have duplicate families with the same name (which can be found by saving out all Families). This was part of today's result (8 different copies of the same family? yikes! and 3 of them are named "Break Line-KAI4" and 2 are "Break Line-KAI1"!):

  • Break Line-KAI.rfa
  • Break Line-KAI1.0001.rfa
  • Break Line-KAI1.rfa
  • Break Line-KAI2.rfa
  • Break Line-KAI3.rfa
  • Break Line-KAI4.0001.rfa
  • Break Line-KAI4.0002.rfa
  • Break Line-KAI4.rfa

@lionel.kai , I believe two "accepted" Ideas were merged, hence the double post.

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones Yeah, but the first idea was "Accepted" three-and-a-half years ago!😂 Will the 3 other (duplicate) Ideas I mentioned get accepted in 2028, 2032, and 2035?😉

This was marked as accepted and supposedly on the roadmap but i can't find it on the public roadmap?

It's bad enough that a lot of features don't get accepted that have hundreds of votes but not even the accepted ones make it into the software 😞
