Dynamic Geolocation, Coordinate Systems, Mapping

Dynamic Geolocation, Coordinate Systems, Mapping

With the permission of one of the users, I wanted to present an enhancement request for Revit. At the moment in Revit it is necessary to convert coordinates to X and Y from 0,0. Users reported that it would be good if there was a possibility to choose the system of coordinates, as it is for example in Civil 3D:

Coordinates Civil 3D.png

This way, in Revit, it will be possible to work with the desired coordinate system without having to exchange data between Revit and Civil 3D. Additionally, it also has to do with later incorrect values when the model is viewed in Forge Viewer. Model location does not match X and Y values set in Revit.

On behalf of the customer:

It would be nice to have dynamic geolocation and online maps in Revit. Maps from BING, Google - something like GEOGRAPHICLOCATION function in AutoCAD and Civil 3D.

Ich warte auf diese Funktion schon seit Jahren

@samuelsanf ,

Do you think there's enough similarity in this Idea asking for the specific geographic location, and the link you shared looking for coordinate systems?

Thank you!

Hi @kimberly_fuhrman-jones ,

The major different with revit current way to specify project location (leaving aside that at the moment it only works for Sun position and shadows projection of the project), is that in Revit you can not define a coordinate system (that works for Survey Point coordinates).

So, selecting a coordinate system in Revit Location & Site is what is about the idea I suggest to merge. Because of that I think the idea raised here includes the one suggested in the other thread.

Selecting a coordinate system is only chossing it from a list, it does not matter if it is done as in classic AutoCAD, Civil 3D, AutoCAD Map 3D or Infraworks.

The different between Revit Location & Site, and AutoCAD's geographyc location, from my point of view are the following:

1. Map: Revit currently have an interactive Bing road map; but ACAD clasic let you swith bettwen Aerial View, Road map and Bird Eye. Of course that would be useful.

AutoCAD - Project LocationAutoCAD - Project Location

Revit - Location and SiteRevit - Location and Site

2. Pin-point location: In Revit you define the location by dragging a pin from the previous position to the new one (which is tedious if the new position is far from the preious one). In ACAD with right click and select "drop marker here" is enought.

3. Selecting Coordinate System: Currently this is not possible in Revit. AutoCAD have a second step showing the coordinate systems that can be uses in the selected location, and let you search by name.

AutoCAD Map 3D and Civil 3D differ a litte, and this one is the only step on that two software, but the important here is only chossing the coordinate system. Not the way you chose. Revit could use a new method.

4. AutoCAD (clasic) final step: The final step in the basic AutoCAD is clicking a point in the model space where the latitude and longitude of the marker (in point number 2.) would be applied and inmediately after that defining the orientation of the  Geographic North. In M3D and C3D, the model space 0, 0, 0 coordinate by default will be at the same time the 0, 0, 0 of the cordinate system (if the user do no change it), and the geographic North will remaind as the drawing Y axis.

In Revit I think the latitude & longitude defined by the marker should be applied at the Survey Point; and the True North should be defined separately with the tools Revit have for that.

5. Revit with Shared Position: In Revit, after acquiring Shared Position from a DWG Drawing with coordinate system defined, Revit Site and Location shows the coordinate system defined and latitude & longitude obtained. Because with a coordinate systen defined, is easy to convert from lat. & long. coordinates to a projected coordinate system that uses meter, feet or us survey feet and backwards.

On the other hand, I would love to see this implemented in revit. It would be very useful when you are going to work with collaborative projects, especially if the only data you have to start a project are IFC or Point Clouds files.

But also these related Ideas are great:
Acquire Coordinates from IFC file

Acquire Coordinates from Recap Point Cloud

I was planning to do this with a dynamo script but never got around to it. It would be nice if you could place a satellite image in Revit as an overlay.

Exactly, that would be a perfect solution for me: a satellite image as background and real environment for a Revit project.

@samuelsanf , thank you for the additional details! I have merged and renamed the posts to be inclusive of the combined topics.

Thank you for the feedback!

Kimberly

Please add a geographical model to Revit.

Environment for Revit® plug-in has a tool dedicated to solving this problem:

I’ve only seen the BETA version of this tool, but it’s amazing and it should be live in a couple of weeks:
