Allow to override color of Duct and pipes system from linked Revit models.

Allow to override color of Duct and pipes system from linked Revit models.

Its quite a pain override pipe/duct system colors from a revit link, the only way is creating several filters that need to be apply every time we create a new template.

It would be good if we could have an ability to globally change the system colors of linked revit models in one go.

Why are MEP categories/elements not being treated the same way architectural and structural elements are? It's simple to change the graphical setting of any category in the architectural linked model or the structural linked model, but try to do the same with the mechanical linked model. You can't. System family graphic overrides for ducts and pipes trump Object Style settings and trying to change visual graphics for linked model pipe and duct components does nothing. Working in a BIM360 environment makes it impossible to change these graphics.

Please give us an option to somehow control the graphics for these mechanical components without having to open the linked model itself.

Hi @Anonymous  - can you elaborate on this a bit?  E.g., are you an architect that wants to suppress the color coding that has been applied by a system or view filter (e.g., make all ducts/pipes white because you want the architecture to stand out)?  Or, are you a mechanical contractor/designer wanting to 'map' the systems (and associated colors) from the linked file to system/color definitions in the host (your) model?  (e.g., if linked model has SystemX with colorY, map that to your ChilledWater system type and it's associated color?  To ask the 'why' question (which helps us understand context and potential solution better)... why do you need/want your colors different than what were setup in your model?

@sdijanovic to answer your question, the reason they are different was that the desire was that the system elements have a consistent color in all views it is viewed in, instead of the mechanical user having to setup filters in all of their views.

Hi,

@Martin__Schmid

If you're coordinating 3 or more discipline models and need a plan where you can follow what elements are from witch model you need to be able to override the colors on the linked model to achieve a readable color code.

If the hvac color code needs to be incorporated in a coordination plan you'll be soon out of colors for the other disciplines....

This is still a limitation in revit...working with the filters is really not practical an is time consuming

Hi @Anonymous  - are you saying you'd want, for example, all ducts in Model/Link A to be one color, and all those in Model B to be in another color?

Or, are you thinking more that the host model allows you to easily set of each system within each linked model, for example...

Model 1 - System Type 1

Model 1 - System Type 2

...

Model 1 - System Type n

Model 2 - System Type 1

Model 2 - System Type 2

...

Model 2 - System Type n

...

Model n - System Type n

Or, yet another way to look at this..

Do you not really care what model it is in, but want to easily control the System Type color from within the host model regardless of which link it is in? (e.g,. any model that contains "Supply Air" is the same color).

This goes back to my reply about giving the users a flexible option to control the visual graphics in the mechanical link similar to how we control VG in the architectural and structural links.

I'm not sure how you would go about fixing this and if it's even possible to give us that option but that is what would give us more flexibility and options to visually control how the mechanical linked models look once they are brought into the host model.

I don't understand why @Martin__Schmid  was trying make this so complicated, and we still can't do it in 2021.

We just want to override the VG of pipes in linked models in exactly the same way as we can every other element in Revit. Is that so hard to understand?

That we can't is not a feature, it is an arbitrary restriction to the point that it might as well be called a bug. A good reason was given, we might want to colour code our drawings by discipline, but frankly no reason need be given other than they're our drawings, we should be able to colour them how we want, again, for the same reason we can with every single other element in Revit!

Seems I only come on this board to rant about Autodesks inability to respond to the basic needs of their customers and address core functionality that is missing or broken from the industry's supposedly premiere BIM authoring tool.

Over and out.

@Anonymous precisely the crux of the battle.

Came upon this thread while struggling with this issue. It seems that 5 years after the initial question that Autodesk still has not fixed this flaw/bug/failure. Same story: I'm using Revit 2021 and want to control the appearance of linked model MEP systems using the VG overrides, but the colors and lines won't change.

@Martin__Schmid any chance Autodesk will resolve this?

Please, Autodesk, @Martin__Schmid, pull some strings and make this a thing already!!!. it is absolutely not a major change in code for Autodesk to make this possible, as it is already possible for literally every other category out there, for heaven's sake 🙂

Any update on this yet @Martin__Schmid ?

Difficult to see why it might be so difficult to implement.

My issue right now - attempting to create a combined services drawing, with various discipline models with their own colours for pipes. I want to override per model so each discipline has one colour, but the pipes never change when I attempt to override them.

AGAIN, I am experiencing this trouble daily! where view style distinction is required between linked Mech/Service models within the hosting Architecture model:

What is required as a priority update to Revit- is that the Hosting model's Linked category override takes precedence over the linked model's native system type> type properties> graphic override. (#PLEASE AUTODESK)

I was just looking for this very same problem and found the following link with a workable solution.

Although not as simple or straight forward as doing a simple Visual Graphics colour override, you need to make a filter consisting of the system types you want to override.

refer  >  https://therevitfairy.wordpress.com/2018/08/23/mep-override-not-working/

So for anyone else looking this is what I did :-

I have a co-ordination model consisting of Mechanical, Plumbing & Electrical linked models.

The objective was to have each discipline as a different colour for a simple visual difference

eg: mech duct = cyan

mech pipe = teal

plumbing = magenta

electrical cable trays = green

The Visual Graphic override worked fine on both the Plumbing & Electrical linked models, however, did not have any affect on the pipework within the mechanical model.

(VG override on fabrication ductwork was ok).

I don't know why the plumbing pipework was ok yet the pipework in mech was not, considering you use the same pipe work albeit with a suitable HVAC system name (a setting I missed somewhere perhaps??).

as per the above link, I did the following :-

created a filter consisting of the pipe system names I wished to have colours overridden.

Make sure filter rule is "OR"  so it picks up each rule.

(as per image below)

Clipboard01.png

In VG added the above filter and selected a lines colour of my choosing

(as per image below)

Clipboard02.png

This worked & all the pipework in the mechanical model changed colour.

I did not try the standard duct types but if the standard VG override doesn't work then the same filter process is done albeit with the duct items selected in the filter.

@Trev_Smith this is great, thank you, I was messing around with worksets, but this is good...except...the Electrical guy is using Duct with a Supply system as a BUS Duct...sigh....back to the drawing board.

EDIT: Was able to make it work with adding the Workset as a rule (AND) and all trhe rest of the (OR) rules.

Filters have come a long way.
