Allow text in formulas

Allow text in formulas

Allow text parameters in formulas.
e.g Fire Rating = FireRating
(as in NBS BIM Object standard)

Since they'll never do it, why not export all your Revit model data to PowerBI where you can have formulas and analysis to your heart's content?

I note that this idea is indicated by many users. After almost 10 years, nothing is yet available in Revit.
My request: enable a text parameter to be controlled by a formula where text values and/or integers, numbers, length can be concatenated. This should not be difficult to achieve, but it offers many possibilities to establish relationships between elements via coding / labels. This is really a shortcoming in Revit.

Bump! We need this.
As a workaround I use lookup tables. But it's way slower and tedious to do.

Bump. This would be really helpful!

Sadly, it being helpful does nothing to getting this actually implemented. This change will not affect their stock price so they simply ignoring it and many other similar issues. Remember YOU are not the customer, the shareholders are.

@crapai

I guess it would need a seismic shift in the industry, moving away from Autode$k, for the management to finally wake up to the reality that the customers are the ones paying the bills.

Plenty of alternatives, assuming the customer base is prepared to take on the challenge of shifting to another platform.

@CEdwardsUN5MX The problem is that the majority of these alternatives are architecture focused and many users are here for the engineering stuff

FINALY ITS HERE (BUT ONLY IN REVIT 2026!)

The Revit forums should be spammed with that video.

It's an April fool's video 😭

10 years later, i still want to combine text & formula

I've seen that they're implementing this in the roadmap.

But I think it's important that it works both ways.

That is, that it can convert non-text format to text: For example, TextParam   =("TEXT "[Length] ", More Text"[Param2] "asdfghjk")
but ALSO that a text parameter can be used in a formula: For example, in a Yes/No parameter   =if(textparam="OK", 1,0)

@arq_42 If they really want to get us to shut up about this, they should create a new API object like RevitFormulaFunction with a InputUnit[] and OutputUnit parameter and an Execute(object[] args) method for us to implement our own functions

Status changed to: Accepted

Congrats! We think this is a great idea, so we've decided to add it to our roadmap. Thanks for the suggestion!

To follow the progress of features in development, please see the Revit Public Roadmap and join the Revit Preview Release to participate in feature testing. (Note that Accepted Ideas may not be immediately available.)

Checked out the roadmap site and I got to ask, did some big firms send out another scathing letter or something? What's going on?
