Connection Speeds?

Are there any recommendations on connection speeds?

From testing, and others I've spoken to it would seem that there is a minimum connection speed of approximately 8-10Mbps in order for consistent performance to occur for just one user. I'm happy to hear other opinions on this.

But what about when increasing the number of users through the same connnection?

Is there a ratio of speed per the number of users? I'm specifically interested in the 10 to 30 user bracket.

My initial thoughts are that not all users will be syncing at the same time, so would a 20/20Mbps connection be sufficient, or does it need to be more than that?

Hello Chad,

In regards to your inquiry, there is no specific minimum speed requirement for the internet for Revit itself, however, the system requirements page does give a minimum Network Speed recommended for Collaboration for Revit.

Autodesk® A360 Collaboration for Revit®

Minimum

Value

Performance

Disk Space

20 GB of free disk space for Collaboration Cache

30 GB of free disk space for Collaboration Cache

30 GB of free disk space for Collaboration Cache

Connectivity

Symmetrical 2 Mbps connection for each machine

Symmetrical 5 Mbps connection for each machine

Symmetrical 8 Mbps connection for each machine

This information is an extract from Revit 2016 system requirements, which you can review at your convenience.

What we can state, based on this information, is that you would require specific internet speed if you are doing workshared projects, but on standalone ones, the internet connection should not represent a major concern.

thanks Dan
but this did not really answer the question?
Do we need 80Mbps for 10 Users on one work-shared Project thru one Connection.
or would be 40Mbps enough suggesting 0.5 Ratio.
In engineering this is a common approach does this apply here?
you should have some empirical data to give us a clue.

Thanks

Michael,

I did get a reply on this from another Autodesk source which said that the CfR service tops out at 50Mbps.

With no other direct reply to the question of "is there a ratio of users to speed", I'm extrapolating that an ideal speed exists anywhere from 10-50Mbps.

This is obviously dependant on number of users, so I'm using 10Mbps as the lowest speed as that is what my experience has been and let's say with a small office of 10 users, up to a larger office of say 50 users at 50Mbps.

This may not be perfect, but all data I have up to this point suggests this as a good starting point.

But, not all users need to save/open at the same time so data transfer will fluctuate. I'm hoping my estimates above are on the high side.

Having said all that, I agree that with all the testing performed during development that there should be more emperical data.

Thanks Chad

that suggests to me we still have to work with 10-12 user maximum per model

similar to working on a LAN

Anybody prove me wrong, please 🙂
