Working on the same projects with fellow student.

Dear autodesk community,

I'm currently using revit for a lot of the projects we're working on.

All of these projects are assinged in group form, but we would like to work together.

In short, is there a way to work on projects at the same time with a student license and without buying our own server?

Maybe something like connecting our laptops? or in the cloud?

If you have any ideas or solutions please reply below 🙂

Kind regards,

Timo Walraven

Yes you can do it if you have local server(LAN) connected to your laptops or you can do it through Autodesk 360 cloud sever(Cloud server required premium conditionals).

You can do it by creating a central file from- Collaborate>Collaborate.

hi,

The Lan solution is not an option, we do not have acces to the school network.

Bim 360 design that features cloud collaboration is not availible for students (yet) and is not in our budget.

Thank you for thinking with me

FYI....working on actual projects with a student license is against the EULA... if caught/reported you can face some pretty hefty fines.

Hi Mpwuzhere,

That's common knowledge, it's a school assignment for educational purposes only.

But i think we share the opinion that it would be great to work on a group project that the entire group could work on at the same time...

At this point in time we have to transfer the files between students for every change we make wich generates a lot of data and wastes a lot of time.

I hope someone else has a real solution for my frustration...  😞

Kind regards,

Timo

You can share a folder on a workstation and keep the central files there.  They can only be worked on in the LAB environment only though...outside of class it is not possible.  You can share it on online programs, but only if accessed by one person at a time, worksharing will crash on share sites. Mostly permission issues.

Try as your own risk.  I am sure Autodesk discourage this for various reasons.

Mixing basic internet based File Sharing services with Revit Worksharing, knowing that students usually have minimal Revit experience, a propensity for late hours as well as barely making deadlines...is a recipe for misery and tears...

If you're willing to sign the "I understand I Will Probably Ruin My Project Right Before My Deadline" disclaimer...go for it. What could possibly go wrong?

Stupid question time: is the instructor expecting students to work together?  Or was this assigned with the assumption that it will be individual work?

hi dgorsman,

Revit is only a part of the complete assignment (analyzing a design and change mistakes a "architect" made) so we could have one person do the revit part and the others the rest. But that's only fun for one person. But in a workflow like this one it's almost impossible timewise to have everyone work on the revit project.

Besides that, the school expects all of us to learn revit but doesn't arrange a worksharing solution besides wetransfer etc. The conclusion i can make from this is that only one student (me) is getting all the revit experience whilst the rest isn't because transfering files every time is just too labour intensive.

So i would like to give my fellow students a shot at revit but at this point in time it's so impractical that we just don't have the time for it and i am ending up being the only one with real experience...
