Wall layers join based on the following:

  1. The Layer function defined under Type Properties >> Structure
  2. The Layer placement within the Core or outside the core

Example Below:

Type 1:

  • Plaster layer - Function: Finish [5] - Placed outside the Core
  • CMU Layers - Function: Substrate [2] and placed in the Core

Type 2:

  • Plaster layer - Function: Finish [5] - Placed outside the Core
  • Air Gap and CMU Layers - Function: Substrate [2] and placed in the Core
  •  Concrete Layer Function - Function: Structure [1] and placed in the Core

Those are not universal settings, sometimes one combination doesn't work and one would need to try another

Is there a way to get the plaster to go around the structural column ?

If it Wraps around the column meaning the column is entirely embedded in wall...

Option 1:

Reduce the size of the column a value = plaster thickness? this way when you join geometry the wall plaster will wrap the column

Option 2:

you can edit the column family and add a plaster layer (another extrusion)

Option 3: (Only if you are familiar with Parts)

Converting the wall to parts allow you to control layers separately  by enabling shape handles / grips
