Did you try to just use import tool? You can use it on project or family.

You have to export Sketchup format to version 7 or 8 to ensure it will import into Revit. If you save SKP as 2021, chances are Revit 2021 won't be able to read it.

Alternatively, you can export Sketchup as IFC and then import that in Revit.

@pwbiermanlytle Which process online doesn't work?

Openthe SKP 2021 file in Sketchup and save it as Version 8... then it will import/Link into Revit

Thank you, but I've tried all those options. There is a step by step that I
need. For example: 1) open Revit Massing & Site tab, open In-Place Mass,
assign a name; 2) Import CAD, select skp file
According to this tutorial, skp file (saved as v6 or v8) should open in
Revit. It doesn't.
If you have a step by step, would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

It does not open...It has to be imported or linked Either into a family or in Project Environment into an in-place component

In Project do the following (in family skip to step 4):

  1. Component >> Model In Place
  2. Select category (Generic Model/Furniture/Casework) which ever suits the nature of what you are importing
  3. Once in Family sketch mode
  4. Go to insert Tab
  5. Import CAD
  6. Select a V8 Skp file
  7. set options Layer/Units
  8. set orientation center to center
  9. Select level (current)
  10. Click open
  11. Once placed adjust position
    1. Finish Model (if in family skip this step and go to 12)
  12. Save family and Load to project

Have tried these steps to no avail. Is it possible (probably) that the author of the SKP file has "leaks" in the 3D model, therefore Revit won't recognize model? Is there an easy way to detect if skp file is 'water-proof'?

thanks

You can try either the free web version or Pro windows version of Formit to check/correct for water tightness then import to Revit.

If you have the subscription Pro version of FormIt for windows, here is the workflow:

  1. In an empty FormIt model, import your SKP file;
  2. Set the display mode to show water tightness (keyboard command DW = display watertighness). Unclosed edges of 3d objects will display as red.
  3. Correct the problem objects, and save the AXM file;
  4. In Revit, import the AXM objects to a Revit family or use the 3D sketch option on the Mass and Site menu.

If you want to use the Free windows version, same steps as above but you will have to export the SKP to an OBJ file and import that in step 1.

Additional workflow steps would be to divide your original geometry into discrete parts that you could then import individually into Revit to allow better control of revisions and choosing the appropriate Revit (ex. cuttable) cuttable families.

Hope this helps,

Revit shouldn't have any issues with non-manifold edges (which result what you referred to as Leak / Water tightness).  This happens when users model geometries using disjoint surfaces rather than extruded solids which is not uncommon.  I have run across so many of such Sketchup models and had no issues importing into Revit. As a matter of fact the Mannequins in the image I shared earlier are actually a Non-watertight object...

How tight a model is might affect energy analysis or if you intend to export to stl for 3D printing but it shouldn't hinder the import process into Revit. However, if you have your doubts, I would recommend stitching it in Sketchup which is much easier than doing that in other software.

Alternatively you can the SKP file as .obj and use Dynamo to convert to a mesh and subsequently to either a to Direct Shape or Solid.byjoinedsurfaces

Edit: you can maybe share your sketchup file for someone to have a look at it?

If all else fail, have the author export the SKP to a DWG (version 2018 or older) then link the DWG in Revit.

@pwbiermanlytle

Also, please confirm:

  1. whether the solution needs to retain the material assignments or only import the geometry;
  2. you are getting only partial geometry or nothing at all.

This will streamline the discussion towards a compatible solution much quicker.
