Did you just install 2018?

I originally installed revit 2019 student version, because that's the version we were learning on. Then the next class  module is based on revit 2018 so I installed 2018. The materials library doesn't work in either version. When I installed 2018 a popup came up and said "a newer version of dynamo is already installed"

Dynamo has nothing to do with materials. If you can no longer access Materials in either version now I suspect your registry got screwed up. You may need to do a clean uninstall and reinstall -- in sequential order -- of both versions. You can try a Repair first though.  Also inspect the paths being used under Option=> File Locations.  Still, I think a reinstall is best -- after a clean uninstall of both versions.

If it wasn't working for either 2018 or 2019 and reinstallation doesn't help...you may have an issue with your graphics card.

See here: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles...

FYI...Student version is the full version with a limited time serial number...

Yes, I looked through some forums and it looks like a video card problem. I need to downgrade the driver to nvidia version 353.62 and it looks like it worked for a few people. I'll let you know how it goes this evening.

SOLVED:

It's now working in both versions 2019 & 2018.

It worked by using the following driver:
