Text editing issue Revit 17

Hi,

I have been having problems with Revit 17 text editing.

When I highlight text to replace it won't start replacing the text until I move my mouse again. Very frustrating!!!!

I realize this is a bug with the new '17 text editing changes, but is anyone actually working on fixing these stupid problems yet?

Regards,

I know there are still some issues with the text editor, but I thought what you are describing was resolved. I could be wrong, but I can't replicate your problem, so just to be sure, do you have Service Pack 2 & 2017.1 installed?

Hi Mike,

Hope you're doing fine.

Regarding your issue about text, I believe @Anonymous got a point there about upgrading the your Revit to 2017.1. Is your Revit version is already Revit 2017.1? Please check the build of your Revit if it is updated to its latest build. You can do this by doing the following:

Step 1. From the Recent files window, click the "About Autodesk Revit XXXX" (see the image below):

About Revit.jpg

Step 2: On the next window, at the upper right hand corner, check the version. Make sure its the latest Revit build 2017.1.1 (see image below):

Revit Build.jpg

That's how you check it. Now in case it's not yet updated, you can update it from Autodesk Desktop App.

Step 1. Click the icon of Autodesk Desktop App located at lower right (see image below).

ADSK Desktop App.jpg

Step 2: Click the Revit icon, "R", and update accordingly. The image below doesn't show any updates because it's already updated.

Revit Update.JPG

*Note: You can also check the version of your Revit by simply looking at the title bar of your project located top middle. You should see "Autodesk Revit 2017.1"if updated or "Revit 2017" if not updated.

Let me know if this solves the issue or not.

We're having the same issue with a couple computers in our office while running Revit 17.0.1081.01, 20161006_3015(x64), 2017.1.

Steps: double-click existing text to edit it, highlight a couple words, then try to type to replace the words (or sometimes using the delete key), and nothing happens. Scrolling the mouse wheel appears to "unlock" the text, but that's an obnoxious work around when you're try to type. And the issue does not seem to consistently happen.

Does Revit 2017.2 fix this? The release notes are a bit too vague to tell.

I have experienced this problem, but that was before the service packs. I am running 2017.2 now and can't replicate your problem, but to be honest, I didn't have this problem with 2017.1 either so, not sure I am the best test.

I am having this exact issue with Revit 2017.2 (2.1 to be exact).  As far as I can tell this is the latest version.  Some of my coworkers are having this issue, but others are not, and all of us are using version 2.1 of 2017.  Is there a permanent fix for this yet?  Obviously you can hit delete first, but literally every other program I use automatically replaces highlighted text with typing, so remembering to do something different in Revit is rather annoying.  It's a muscle memory thing.  Never even had to think about it before.  It would be nice for it to work like normal.

2017.2.2 didn't fix this... 2018 didn't fix this either!?  Are you seriously freaking kidding me right now?!  What are you people even doing over there!?  What do you have against annotating a drawing!?  Are you moving entirely toward iPhone-only compatibility?

I guess I shouldn't be, but I am surprised this is still an issue for some.

Can someone post a video of the problem?

Posting a video won't help because the problem is not a "the wrong thing is happening" problem, but rather a "nothing is happening" problem.  Posting a video of nothing happening seems silly, but then you Realize it is Revit so the sky is the limit on things not doing what you might expect them to.

So, you have some text, but you don't like what it says, so logically you want to change it.  You double click on it and it opens the editing box.  All of the text is highlighted.  25-years of using a computer has taught you that so far this is the normal behavior of a functioning text editor, and that if all the text is highlighted, you can just move your hand off your mouse and start typing with both hands and it will delete the bad text and replace it with your beautiful new ideas.

But Revit has other other plans for you.

You're looking at the sheet of paper on your desk, or the engineer's redlines as you type to make sure you carefully capture all of the important context.  You reach back for your mouse to click ok... but then you realize that nothing has happened.  The original text is still sitting there.  Unaffected. Mocking you. Laughing at you.

So you hit Escape to start over - somehow thinking there was some mistake.  Now Revit wants to know if you really want to save the changes to your text.  Wait, what?  What changes? You haven't changed anything.  Frantically stabbing the Escape key does no good.  It's as though someone has put a sticker on your screen that looks like an error message. You end up in a loop of rage clicking and escaping over and over again expecting logic to engage at some point and let you out of the hell that has become this editing session.

So you find your mouse again.  You click No to indicate that you don't want to keep any of the changes that you didn't make.  You double click the text again.  Now you have to look back at your keyboard to find the backspace button... somewhere in the North 40 by the F12 and Prt Scr keys.  God, finally, an empty text box.  But now the mouse has moved the cursor a little ways away from it, so when you finally find where you were in your notes, and you've re-typed them your eyes swim back into focus on your screen to discover... yes, an empty text field.  Again.

Fate has taught you the folly of the Escape key, and since you're a smart monkey you don't fall for that trap again.

You simply give in to the idea that Revit does not edit text. At all.  It actually hates the idea.  So you delete all of the text in your drawing and just make new, unique versions of each piece, never to bother with the fussy notion of trying to edit any of it, ever again.

Well, if i understand correctly, nothing happening is the wrong thing....

I suggested a video, because I can't replicate your problem and have never been able to. (I created a video) I was curious to know if there is something you and others may be doing with cursor movement, placement, order of things etc. I can only do that, if I see what you see. Isn't a picture worth a thousand words anymore? Your last post was 500 words, you could write another 500 and see if that helps?

I agree with your comments about that stupid new "Do you want to keep changes in your text note" dialog. I can't stand that dialog.

March 2018, using Revit 2018.2 and still experiencing this bug... I'm seriously thinking of "upgrading" to 2016

Problem STILL exists....

Revit 2018 ver:

18.2.0.51
20170927_1515(x64)
2018.2

Someone should be fired over this. This is absolutely ridiculous Autodesk has ignored this.

We can not TYPE a sentence in Revit without frustration!

Let see if it's in Revit 2019 in a few weeks...

Basically, if you do not have your mouse hovering over the box of the text you are trying to edit, the Revit Text editor does not do anything.  You might be halfway through a long text note before you notice that nothing has happened.

I think the Revit users in this thread have described the issue pretty thoroughly.  The same thing has been happening to me since I started using 2017.  I'm updated to Revit 2017.2 now.  Also running Revit on a pretty high-performance BOXX CPU.  It is really disappointing that this ever was a bug, and still is even after service packs.

Here are two videos of the issue.  https://photos.app.goo.gl/hbDijyfNMHA311NB9

Sorry, they aren't great videos, but I think they show what's going on pretty clearly - adding text or removing text sometimes doesn't show up until you pan around.  They aren't screen recordings either, because you need to see what the user is doing with the keyboard and mouse.

Revit 19, problem still exists...

Lets get it together Autodesk guys

I've seen this issue from time to time but was never able to find steps to reliably reproduce it. Anyone found a series of steps that reproduces the problems every time?

That exact behavior exists in many places throughout Revit.

You might try checking the screen more often.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.
