Structural Wall vs Architectural

Hello all,

I have two questions about this topic.

 1.) Does the same to create a structural wall from the beginning with to create an architectural wall first and give after the Structural Parameter [ image 1 ]  ? 

2.) If I have a wall with multiple layers, and I want only the concrete layer to be the structural material , I just need to Edit type> and assign the structural material option to concrete or I need to create a separate structural concrete wall? [image 2]

1. If you check the structural and enable the analytical model, you essentially have made a structural wall from an architectural one.

2. Declaring that the concrete is your structural component is enough, you don't need to model a separate wall. However, make sure the material has also a physical asset to it, otherwise the analytical model can't calculate.

For the second question, I declare the 'Metal stub layer' as a structural material. I checked also the physic parameters. [Image 1 ] But I don't get the analytical model of this layer [ Image 2 ] .

Am I missing something?

Based on these screenshots, I can't see if you also did enable the analytical model (checkmark) for the architectural wall.

But based on the second screen I would say, you forgot; true?

Yes it's true.. But I don't want the whole wall to be concidered  as structural. If I enable the analytical model (checkmark) does only the 'Metal stub Layer' that will be calculated for the structural analysis?

Something else that I noticed is that if I unckeck the structural material in the edit type [Image 3], but I enable the anlytical model (checkmark in properties) I get the analytical model of the wall... but I cannot understand why, since I don't have assigned any structural material..

Short answer: Yes 🙂

Only the materials within the core of your wall checked as structural will be used for the calculations.

Regarding your comment: That makes sense. Making something an analytical element does only enable the possibility to calculate. In your case the analytical wall does have no information attached to it (which will cause an error in analysis).

Creating structural multi-layers walls, with a structural core material...I don't see the reason to create architectural walls. As with a structural wall we can have the 'architectural' materials (as insulation) out of the core region , and the structural material (as concrete) in the core region and declare it as a structural material.

I have see a couple of videos where we have the structural walls and the architectural walls separated.

So for example all the conctere walls as structural.

And all the walls that contan the finish materials as architectural.

The problem is that I don't know which approach is the correct one.

Well, both ways will work. There is not really a correct way of doing it, I would say it is a matter of style and a lot depends on the way you collaborate with other teams.
