Space Planning Family; Not Quite Working!

Hi all,

I am attempting to create a family to assist with the earlier stages of space planning in our design work.

However in doing so, I am having some trouble to make all sides of my desired shape work in dependently of each other (file attached).

For example, I can successfully make certain sides of my desired shape (family) work however when other sides of this shape are adjusted the working side of the family moves along with that change.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards, Peter.

What eaxctly are you trying to control in this family?

Is this shape meant to be symmetrical? If it is, then it would be nice to add the same parameters to equivalent features on the family.

Is there a reason why parts of the shape have not been directly dimensioned?

Another way to enforce relationships between parts of this family would be to use formula driven parameters.

I would simplify the dimensions, apply parameters accordingly, use formulas if needed. For instance, I would make 301 = 302+102. That will make parameters drive each other.

Hi and thank you for your reply.

The intention of the shape is not for it to remain symmetrical. Given the purpose is for space planning, each of the sides will need to able to be flexed or pulled in different directions and independently from each other.

The challenge I have encountered is all sides work as they should but one side (left side or 1), when flexed, affects the other sides of the shape or better described this particular side does not work independently of the others.

I am aiming to achieve something similar to what is found at this LINK.

Wouldn't it just be faster to just purchase the families from myCADD vs trying to create your own?

😕 it's bloody hell expensive for a generic model family which needs 30 mins to model! But as @Anonymous said it might just be faster and you can develop it further from there on by adding new shapes/variations to the 7 default ones they have in it

@RDAOU - welcome back! Long time no see!

@Anonymous - In which case, try this. Admittedly at the cost of the wonderful symmetry, all sides are as independent as you may want.

See the attached file.  I am wondering if it would be more flexible using in-project filled regions?

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.

I have since been able to create a working solution that is working both in plan and 3d.

Hi there. May I ask what your final solution was? I need to create elements for space planning also, for 2d and 3d views in Revit.

Many thanks
