SOLVED - Cant Delete View Template

Edit - OK I Figured it out. User error.

It seems that you cant delete a view template from the "Apply View Template" popup.

You can however delete them using the: view / graphics / view templates / manage view templates popup.

Probably should have checked that before posting.

Hi everyone,

I have encounted a strange error today that I cant seem to figure out. 

Im rebuilding our office template to make it more user friendly for new users. I am planning on creating a series of view templates for different view types to minimise end users having to overide things manually and to ensure consitancy through the drawing set. 

The problem is I cannot delete a view template! The delete button on the template popup is always greyed out. I opened a new project using the OTB architectural template and cant delete any view templates in there either (see attached screen shot).

Im running the latest 2016 R2 so is this a new bug or have I done something wrong somewhere?

Im sure I could delete view templates 6 months ago.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

However, I can't find: view / graphics much less  view / graphics / view templates /.

I don't see anything like that under the view tab.

Could you post a couple of screen shots?

Yes you can delete a view template!

Before deleting a view template, you may want to create a view list to determine the views to which the template is assigned. 

To delete a view template follow the steps below:

1. Click View tabGraphics panelView Templates drop-downManage View Templates (see ToadDN's illustration) Thanks @ToanDN
2. In the View Template dialog, under View Templates, use the Discipline filter and the View type filter to limit the list of view templates.
3. In the Names list, select the view template to delete.

   Under View Properties, notice the value for Number of views with this template assigned. If it is greater than 0, you will be able to remove the view template assignment for those views, or assign a different view template when deleting this template.

4. Click (Delete).
5. If any views have this template assigned to them, a message displays, indicating the number of views affected. (see image below)
   • To assign a different template to those views, click Choose a replacement view template.

   • Notice the full list is available, not just schedule views.

   • To remove the template assignment, click Remove view template references.
   • To exit the dialog without making any changes, click Cancel.
   • To determine which views use the view template, create a view list.

I know this is an old post, but after running into the same thing in 2020, I want to slam my head against a wall. What is the logic in making these two windows behave differently when they look the same! AUTODESK!

Well they have different names to start with.  You get to the one dialogue when you select "Apply' view template.  It seems logical that this is not the place to manage the templates.

Yet it is, apparently, the place to copy, rename and edit parameters of templates. There's definitely something illogical here.

I wouldn't call this user error. When you are in the "Assign View Template" pop-up, the delete button just shouldn't be there if it can never be used. By having it there but greyed out, it implies that you should be able to use the delete function, but something is preventing it. Minor flaw but a design flaw nonetheless.

Edit: I'm working in Revit 2022 and this issue still exists.

What logic is that? Isn't it easier just to have ONE manage dialog? Why need a SECOND dialog box to "apply" the template? I'm convinced there is a team of goblin-like creatures huddled around a crt monitor in the bowels of some non-descript office bldg in ....idk maybe Rockford, IL, with the sole purpose of adding UNNECESSARY complexity to this already overburdened heap.
As further evidence i would point you to the GREYED OUT 'Apply Properties' button in the View Template Dialog (it doesn't say manage on the actually dialog box, only in the drop down). 

Furthermore, the 'Assign View Template' dialog box has a permanently greyed out icon for the  'DELETE VIEW TEMPLATE'

So BOTH dialog boxes are aware that they don't both need to exist, but in a touching show of solidarity, they've chosen a death pact. If one goes, both go. 

There is no reason to have two. There are many reasons to have only one. Reason 17 is that if I could use the 'delete view template' icon to DELETE A VIEW TEMPLATE, i would not have googled it. I would not have read any of the flimsy (no offense) arguments that seek to jsutify the need for two, i would not felt compelled to reply thusly. Now you're reading my reply and will undoubtedly feel ssimilarly compelled to reply, which i whole  heartedly support as part of my broader objective to support civil discourse.

You are entitled to your opinion but your choice of how you express it is a bit over the top. The other users aren't trying to justify it, they are expressing an understanding of the logic that explains why it is the way it is. They aren't expressing any opinion as to it's validity. It's just an understanding so that we use that can help us remember why some things are not available in each of the respective tools.

If you want to tell Autodesk your feelings about how you think it doesn't make sense, may I suggest the Product Feedback page or if you would like to see a change, you can try the IDEAS forum. The vast majority of the people reading these forums are users, like you.
