is there a way to keep the retain section box in 3D view after its been turned off and back on again?

• Use a Scope Box to define the Section Box. Scope Boxes are persistent.
• Section Boxes are rectangular, so unfortunately no. For spinning a 3D view around, you would have to use visibility control on the areas outside of interest. For placing on a sheet, you could try layering multiple 3D views with partitioned Section/Scope boxes to create the irregular shape.
