Schedule 2D Areas

Quick Question,

I need to take areas from my elevations, for use in a seperate softwrare to illustrate regulatory compliance. I have beeen using filled regions to get the areas, I can name them so that they can be referenced bak to the elveation, but i cant tag the area of the region. Is it possible to create a tag that will tell you the area of the region and schedule it?

Is it possible to calculate areas using line based families?

Any suggestions would be greatly apprecciated! I have attached a screenshot of what the current office solution is, drawing a aregion with no fill and manually filling out the text!

You should be able to do this using shared parameters.

The process will be as follows:

1. Create a Shared Parameter called something like "Filled Region Area".
2. Go to Manage > Project Parameters > Add > Shared Parameter and then browse to the new shared parameter and apply it to Detail Items.
3. You can now select the Filled Region, and enter the Area given by Revit in the Shared Parameter field (Area for Filled Regions is a System Family which can't be scheduled).
4. Create or Edit a Detail Item Tag.
5. Create or Edit the Label.
6. Hit Add a Parameter and select your Shared Parameter.
7. Load the Tag into your project and apply that tag to Detail Items.

You should now be able to create a schedule for detail items based on the new parameter.

Apologies for the delayed response, I had been away on annual leave and am only now catching up.

The tip below has worked and is very useful, many thanks. It would be great however if the area parameter of a detail item could be tagged and used rather than having to enter the area manually!

Unfortunately not. We are still on Revit 2015, perhaps there is functionality in Revit 2016 that allows for it?

Buliding on @Chris.Aquino's suggestion for adding a shared parameter to hold the area value, which could then appear in a tag, you can semi-automate the filling in of the area values by using Dynamo.  I say semi-automate because it will not update with every change to a filled region or automatically populate the value when you add a new filled region.  That said, it is still faster than manually adding and maintaining the values.

The attached DYN file was created in Dynamo 0.8.2.  I am also attaching a capture of the graph, in case you need to recreate it on an earlier version.  All of the nodes used are "out-of-the-box;" you will not have to install any packages.  In the DYN file, the shared parameter name is "FilledRegionArea" (no spaces in the name), but you can edit the Code Block that holds that string and change it to whatever name you choose to use.

As mentioned, the DYN file will need to be opened in Dynamo and re-run every time there is a change/addition.  My test file had 578 Filled Regions (I added three myself, the others must be in our template file), and running the file took a couple of seconds.  If your projects have significantly more Filled Regions, it may take a bit longer.  And, if you edit just one filled region, you could manually update that filled region's area without using the DYN file.

I had to put the DYN file in a ZIP file, as the forum would not allow me to attach a DYN file.

Yes, thanks.  I saw that -- I was hoping for something more seamless in the future.  

Why can I not use a formula to say that my "filled region area" shared parameter that I made is equal to the un-schedulable area that Revit calculates?  

The dynamo thing works, but it doesn't update live, it seems.

 Your solution is using a manual input so it doesnt schedule at all.

That was back in 2015 the easiest way. It does schedule, but you need to update it manuallly. The dynamo option suggested by Koch is semi-automatic.

I can appreciate that the post was created in 2015 but I think it should be
retitled so it doesn't mislead people into thinking it was actually going
to work.
You can see there is a lot of interest in the post and I wondered how many
people went through the exercise.
