Revit "Failed to open document"

Hello,

I'm trying to open a revit-file, that was probably made with Revit 2011, in Revit 2016.

When I do, Revit says "Failed to open document".

I already tried things like "Audit" and "Detach from central". Didn't work..

Is there any solution for this problem?

Regards,

@Matt__W

Thanks for sharing this link on model corruption.

Hi @Anonymous

I was going through your journal file again and found that you have encountered an error installing recent add-ins (on May 11).There is a warning note as follows:

 0:< start up warnings for AddIns
'C 11-May-2017 08:24:28.543;   0:< <-DesktopMFCApp::doStartupWarnings

Can you try opening another model in Revit 2016 and re-install that addin or uninstall and try opening this model again (after you run the recent SP update)

Please follow up on on the status.

Thanks.

Thanks @Anonymous for going through several steps to try to recover the file for the OP.

Yes, it is likely that in this case, the file itself cannot be recovered.

Hi @Anonymous

It is however, a best practice to keep your application up-to-date and you will likely have less file corruption, maintenance issue, and anomalies in your workflow.

While you are correct that Revit should be kept up to date...it is also important to make sure IT/BIM Support wants everyone at the same level to eliminate file corruption if someone updates out of sync.  So making suggestions like that is up to BIM Support, not the user.

Hi @m.morsink

I wanted to follow up on the status.

There is a warning note analysed from the journal file you provided us with.

 0:< start up warnings for AddIns
'C 11-May-2017 08:24:28.543;   0:< <-DesktopMFCApp::doStartupWarnings

Can you try opening another model in Revit 2016 and re-install that addin?

or uninstall the add-in and try opening this model again (after you run the recent SP update)

Test Revit with all add-ins disabled [or selectively disable add-ins] follow the steps below:
1.  Close Revit.
2.  Locate the following folder:
    C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\[Version]
3.  Temporarily move the add-in files from the folder above to another location.
4.  Launch Revit; add-ins will be disabled.

Alternate locations that add-ins could be loaded from:
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins    (This location can be used for add-ins that span multiple products/versions.)
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit 2016\AddIns   (This location is generally used for Internal Add-ins, but some older add-ins may still try to load into this location.)
NOTE:
  • Do not attempt to disable the add-ins by renaming them but keeping them in the original folder. Although this will keep the add-ins from appearing in Revit, they may still affect how Revit functions, so this process will NOT provide useful test results.
  • When testing is complete you can move the add-in files back into the original folder.

Please keep us posted and let us know if there is any progress in launching you model and please attach the back up file as well as the team here will continue our best attempts to help retrieve your file.

Please mark this response as "Accept as Solution" if it answers your question. Kudos gladly accepted.

@Viveka_CD, @Anonymous, @Matt__W,

Thank you all for looking in to the file and trying to get it opened.

I think i have to accept that the file is too badly damaged to open it again.

I already followed the steps you mentioned, it was no success.

About the Revit version, it's not up to me to get the version up to date with service packs etc. Unfortunately..

Regards,

I'm trying to save a Revit file but the system shows me " Failed to open document" and does not let me to save the file. Does anybody have an idea what should I do?
