Revit 2025 IFC can't be opened, and if imported it's not visible

Hello,

I have to open and gather several IFC in a model but I can't even open one in Revit.

Even if I check the graphism tab and the IFC is checked, it's not visible.

I tried opening the file directly but the software is unable to do so.

Can you help me?

Have a nice day,

@clailler

Are you opening the IFC as in File>Open>IFC or are your using Insert>Link IFC? the latter should generate a report listing what has been translated and errors if any. Did you check that to make sure it is not empty or has errors?

Can you add the IFC to a .zip and upload that here?

Thank you for your response, I did try both. I have an error report for the opening method, and no error message for the linking method.

Here are the file and report

Both methods work fine at my end

  • File >> Open >> IFC
  • Insert >> Link >> Link IFC

I suggest that you check if you have the latest Revit Updates/Hotfixes installed ...otherwise I can also save it as a .rvt for you if you wish

That's weird, do you think it's because I'm still on the trial version? I downloaded the software a few days ago so I think I have the updates/hotfixes installed.

Thank you for the help, I would appreciate it! But I also need to fix this bug on my end !

Have a nice day!

The trial version does not always include the Updates. These are downloaded and installed separately (need to log in and go to your account>products & Updates >Trials)

  • Keep al in same folder...
  • Use the NAOW_STR#2023BE STR.ifc.RVT (if you wish to continue working with thte IFC and wish to schedule/tag its components)
  • Or use the NAOW_STR.RVT as a reference...this is the IFC Opened directly and resaved as .rvt (no shared parameters in this one)

I have the same problem, but maybe it is related to a large size of IFC? it is about 500MB. Could you answer?

No, the IFC file size is irrelevant, it would take longer to translate all elements and generate the shapes but has nothing to do with not opening at all. The IFC @clailler posted is 14Mb that is enough to tell you that the issue is not size related. However, clearing your system's cash and %TEMP% as well as ensuring you have suffent memory would greatly help though

I have IFC file muc hbigger than 500Mb and they still open fine with no issues

Thank you, clear. So I need patience maybe, Revit was hanging for a while and now started to show percentage. Perhaps it will open then. Only that the computer is new with 128RAM, SSD with 550 GB free space, it is not clear why is it so slow

Linking an IFC file into a Revit view can take a long time because it is primarily a CPU-intensive process, and Revit is mostly single-threaded for many operations, including parsing and importing IFC data. If the exported IFC files used High LOD when they are complex with lots of geometry and metadata, which need to be converted into Revit elements, then it is normal that it hangs for a while. Revit has to map IFC classes to its internal categories, which takes processing power.

Morever, i fit contains complex geometries which are non-native to Revit, especially meshes, can take longer to process. Nested elements (like families, groups, and assemblies) in IFC also add extra conversion steps.

So in short, it could be a 500Mb IFC and opens in 2 mins and it might also be a 50Mb IFC that takes 2hrs to open
