Building location is far from the actual location

Hi All,

I have a architectural model that has been used for Dalux (Similar to Navisworks)  for multiple times. Recently I got a new revised MEP model but the model has come up far from the arch model itself (snap attached). Tried acquiring the coordinates but didn't work.  Tried aligning the grid levels but the building itself is in  weird location to start with.

Any advices? should I go back to the client and ask for a coordinated model?

Thanks in Advance.

Havent the coordinates and true north been defined in your model before? And the MEP model is it a Revit model or a coordination model?

But before doing anything in such a case, I would ask the question: who has the correct coordinates—you or them? I've had several encounters in the past with MEP and structural consultants who receive the architect's model link it in center-to-center, sometimes move the link arbitrarily, and then start modeling simply wherever that link lands.

Thanks for your response.
The Mep model was a separate IFC model which I saved down as a .rvt file. The ARCH model is issued to us by the client via cloud. So, Im assuming they have the coordinates. Apologies I'm not the Revit guy.

I tried linking the model centre to centre but still the model lands as shown in the attachment I previously queried. The main aim for me is to upload the MEP model to a 3D viewing software so I can look at coordination and stuff like that which is not possible since it gives me the message that these buildings are kept far from each other.

You have to Unpin it if it is Pinned then Move/Rotate & Align manually... The next question would be are they local models or are they still hosted on the cloud? This determins whether you can use Publish Coordinates or not.

  • You need to establish shared coordinates and a common site between both if you wish to work with that MEP model regularly.
  • If the MEP consultant will issue you a new IFC every time they change something, then you will need to talk them into setting up their model to the correct coordinates; Otherwise you will end up repeating this process every time you receive an update

They are local models. We have downloaded these models from cloud for 3D uploads. In that case, I could publish the coordinates yeah?

But that doesn't eliminate the process of manually aligning the MEP model to the exact location right?

if both are local, then yes, you can publish to the MEP model.

This eliminates the manual process, provided the MEP consultant is willing to align their model to the shared coordinates as well. If they are not, you will have to repeat the process every time they send you an IFC. The best approach is to have a discussion and determine what works best for both of you and the client.

Ideally, after you set up and save everything, send the MEP.rvt or a DWG export back to the MEP team and ask them to align their model accordingly.

  • If they are using Revit, they can easily reset the shared coordinates in their model: Link yours in → Align → Acquire Coordinates → Save.
  • If they are not using Revit, they can use the DWG file for the same process.

Later, when they issue a new IFC, ask them to include/use the shared coordinates and not the coordinates of the local CS

Appreciate your support. This has helped a lot.
Going to inform the client to  take care of this as we would have to manually align everything.
