Revit 2018 No material browser

Anonymous
Not applicable

I just startet using Revit 2018, student version. Have not tried revit before.

I found out that the material browser does not work. I cannot open the browser at all (Manage/Materials) or change any materials by using "Edit type"

Tried to repair and uninstall the Material Library but that did not work. Then I tried to reinstall the entire software. That did not help either.

I have looked at the File/options/File location, and it is the right path.

(As I know very little of software, I do not know if this information will help. But when I look at my computers local disk (c:)/Program data/autodesk/rvt 2018/librarys/Denmark and chose any of the folders there is a lot of rfa files. If I go throug revit/options/File location and choose the path, there are no files in the Denmark subfolders)

Hope someone can help me.

Hi @ToanDN

The dev team has suggested that you try to reinstall DirectX on the system (available on the install media: rvt\x64\Tools\DirectX\DXSETUP.exe)

and let us know if you get any errors when installing and reinstalling?

Your journals list the following debug warnings: **

DBG_WARN: Unable to create D2D render target: line 63 of Source\DXFactory.cpp
DBG_WARN: Can't get OGS device (DisplayUtil::getCMUIDevice): line 98 of UtilityUI\ManageMaterialUI.cpp.
DBG_WARN: Initialization required external components failed. Material Browser dialog can't be created: line 230 of Dialog\MaterialBrowserDlg.cpp.
DBG_WARN: Creating Material Browser dialog failed: line 71 of UtilityUI\MaterialUIImp.cpp.

Looking forward to your reply update.

Hello,
I've tried all the forum features, but I did a very interesting test, I own a Dell XPS with Nvidia GeForce GT 525M video adapter, I uninstalled the Nvidia Software through the control panel and then opened Revit, even without the driver. video and tested the Material Browser that worked perfectly, then Windows started downloading the update for the driver, after rebooting and already with the recognized Nvidia adapter, I opened Revit and it worked again. Sorry, I'm Brazilian and I used the translator.

Hi everyone!

After three desperate weeks trying to fix this problem I got it!

I have tried everything from every forum I have logged (even this one). I had exactly the same problem than @ToanDN, and this has been the only solution that works.

1º I install nvidia 388.13. After it I just desintall one part ( just 388.13 version, not 3.10.0.95, not PhysX 9.17.0524)

After desintalling that, I tried, and it worked. Then I could install nvidia again (even 388.13) and everything is fine.

Thanks a lot @jcosme

Hi @Anonymous,
In my computer it only worked with version 353.62 of the driver, and I still had to prevent Windows from updating it automatically.

Is that version still up on nVidia driver website?  I remember the oldest I could find is 369.something.  I did the uninstall/reinstall with the 369.xx and 383.13 and both didn't work.

Hi @ToanDN

Glad to hear that worked for you and thanks for sharing. I will log this with development.

Still awaiting some feedback if there could be anything else that causes this issue.

Hi, Viveka!  How are you?

First of all, thanks a lot for your attention and effort. Any updates on this issue?   The solution with the driver 353.62 doesn't work for me as I am using Windows 10 and this version doesn't install on it. The solution by lauarquitecta (uninstall just the driver) has worked in part because when I unistall the driver, revit uses the notebook's integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000. If I reinstall the driver, the problem returns. This is happening only on Revit 2018.  The material browser of the Revit 2017 is working good.

I'm using a Samsung Notebook with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M, Windows 10 Pro, version 1709 SO comp 16299.64.

I have already tryed the following:

  • Uninstall and reinstall Revit 2018;
  • Uninstall and reinstall different versions of the NVIDIA drivers several times.

Best regards and thanks in advance for you help.

I use WIndows 10 too and nVidia driver 353.62 installed just fine.  Revit 2018 and its material library works like a charm since.

Thanks ToanDN.  This version solved the Material Manager issue (didn't open) on my Samsung RF511 notebook.

Version 353.62

Driver download: http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/87789/en-us

Procedure:

1 - Removed all NVidia software/driver using Revo Uninstaller

2 - Intalled the version 353.62  downloaded with the above link

3 - Restarted Windows.

Best regards,

Jorge Torres

Thank you ToanDN..rolling back the NVIDIA to 353.62 version as you advised resolved the same issue with material browser on Revit 2018 on Windows 10 64b on my trusty Dell M6600 had tried reinstalls and all the rest until I came on your solution. Looks like the old Quadro 3000M days of support are numbered which is a disaster for what would otherwise be a great laptop

Hi again.

I wondering if this could help me too...

I read all the posts, but not sure if I understand it all.

Should I install a new driver? If yes, do I need to uninstall the old one first?

Does it make any other chances on my computer? (Just afraid to lose my data)

Hi jelepanduro,

It worked for me and has improved everything - even getting 3ds renders done quickly with processor regularly hitting 100%
