Revit 2017 Failing when 3ds Max is Running

I have discovered a strange issue that I haven't yet seen posted about on the internet before...

Circumstance:

I have been using Revit 2017 for a long time now with no issues UNTIL I just downloaded 3ds Max 2017 a couple of days ago. While running 3ds Max and Revit simultaneously, Revit will close unexpectedly from just sitting there. No option for recovery after I reopen it. If 3ds Max is NOT open, Revit will continue running flawlessly as always. Since Revit closes unexpectedly, I don't receive any error messages before it disappears entirely. It is as if some magic task manager is force-closing the application.

Has anyone else come across this issue before? 

Any ideas on how to fix it?

Could be a lack of memory/RAM on your PC.

Revit uses an huge amount of RAM, esp. when projects get large/complex.

How much RAM do you have on your machine?

I'll go ahead and post my specs to eliminate further questions concerning hardware. I use a workstation at my office.

Intel Xeon CPU E3-1270 v6 @ 3.80GHz

RAM: 16.0GB

Windows 64-bit OS, build 17134.165

NVIDIA Quadro P2000

I also checked the task manager and 3ds Max uses only 1400-1500MB of RAM while Revit uses 2100-2200MB of RAM. Even while both are running simultaneously, they should be able to run easily along side each other.

I would note that 3ds Max is pretty catchy and lags pretty often (even without Revit open). I linked a revit file into it as an .fbx after turning off as much as I could before exporting. I tried linking it directly as a revit file but it ran slowly as well.

16 GB of ram is really not enough if you are working on large/complex Revit projects.

I'd suggest upgrading all PCs to at least 32 GB of high quality RAM.

What is you Page Memory size?  With only 16GB of RAM Windows may need to swap the memory from RAM to Page Memory when you open multiple memory hogging applications.  If the Page memory size is 0 or too little it can crash.

Given that even with Revit closed and only 3ds Max as the only running program, I have 10GB free for use (with all windows and background processes included) and it is still running slowly... If I were to run the model with Revit by itself, it still has plenty of memory leftover for use as well. If I were running tight to the limit I could understand, but since I am still showing less than half my total with both of them running at the same time then I can't see that being the issue.

How can I check? And how can I switch if need be?

Is this a standard procedure for running the two programs side by side? Something is telling me that if 3ds Max is running slowly by itself, then that program has to be the underlying issue

No it is not procedure.  It is a Windows' way to mitigate the shortcoming of not having enough RAM.
