Rendering issue in revit 2017

I did my first renderings in Revit 2017. My first impression is ... VERY COOL ... Nice enhancements

But they broke a couple of things ...

1 - linear light sources ... Revit wants to render linear light sources as point light sources. I figured out how to change the properties in the family and I had it working for about an hour, but then it reverted back to a point light source and I could no longer make it render as a linear light. All of the fixes I found refer to older versions of Revit and they will refer to a feature like turn of soft shadows. Well .... that is not an option in Revit 2017. That menu has been changed and that option is gone ... ARGGHH!!

2 - Self illuminating asset / material ... I had blue class that I wanted to illuminate from the back ... when my linear light malfunctioned I tried to make it glow by self illumination ... this would randomly switch from a good blue glow to a bright cyan color. ARRGGHH!! The "FIX" was to turn the self illumination off and back on in the view and this would be a temporary fix, and it would sooner or later revert back to bright cyan again.

Are these 2017 software bugs or am I missing something?

Hi, Jefferyrath,

I'm Judy, a Revit specialist. Happy to help with your rendering question! I see you're having problems with linear light sources that won't render as linear light sources after a time, but revert to point sources, and that you're having a problem with the quality of a self-illuminated glass wall.

The first thing I'd suggest is making sure you have the latest build of Revit 2017 installed. Revit 2017.2 was just released on Friday, so please see if you get different results with the latest build.

There are several things I can think of that we may want to look into. Revit 2017 has a new rendering engine so you may need to make some adjustments to the way you render; details are in the Product Help. There also may be issues with the lighting fixture families you're using. There could also be an issue with your graphics card and/or its driver.

If you're still having rendering problems after updating the software, can you post a sample model (and screenshots of the problem) that shows the problem and contains the lighting fixture families that aren't rendering properly? Please create a new session of Revit, recreate the problem, and send me the journal from that session. Journals can be found at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit 2017. The journal name will be something like journal.0001.txt.

Thanks, and let me know how it goes!

Best ,

Hi, jefferyrath,

I haven't heard back from you and I was wondering if updating your software solved the problem, or if you need further help. Let me know if you do and I'll be happy to continue helping you!

I downloaded the patch and ran it twice and my Revit still says 2017.1

I updated to 2017.2 and it is still broken.

Sometimes the self illuminated textures will display an odd color and linear light sources display as point light sources
