Potential of Revit with other BIM Software in Lead The Architecture profession

 Hi Community,

I just want to do some survey about Revit Software regarding my topic. If you are working in architecture profession, would you like to use Revit or DO you think other software like SketchUp, RhinoBIM, Grafisoft Archicad and etc is better to be used in the architecture profession? Can you give a bit pros and cons about the Revit software? If you have anything to add up, feel free to do so.

Thanks

Syakur

For me it is not so much what I would like to use. There are some reason why we ended up with Revit instead of another program.

-We wanted to supply better documentation for our clients, therefore we wanted to switch to 3D (architecture) software.

-A lot of other companies in our region are/were using Revit, meaning easy cooperation.

-A lot of our clients are/were still using Autocad. Expectation of easier import/export between Auotcad/Revit.

-We already used other Autodesk software.

Looking at the above points Revit was the obvious choice for us.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.

Louis is correct on all counts.

Also - Revit objects have intelligence. I have brought in structural models from Microstation into our Revit models and the structural members come in without intelligence.

In addition, Revit works well with NavisWorks for clash detection, which potentially saves thousands of dollars by locating and fixing clashes before the project goes on to the construction site.

Here is what Revit would not work well for - photo realistic rendering, video walkthroughs, other cutesy-pretty stuff. There are programs better suited to these purposes But for compiling a set of fully annotated and scheduled construction documents, Revit is a valuable tool. .

Revit leads the way as you can have multiple people working within the same model and usually in the same view as long as they are working with different categories.  Now I know ArchiCAD has this capability too, but users are assigned specific areas of the model to work on instead of having a whole floor to work on one thing.  (unless they changed it since the last time I worked with it). I didn't care for ArchiCAD with the reliance on layers then layer styles, then view styles, then visibility styles.  Yes, Revit has these too, but they are easier to work with.

Sketchup is a great way to create quick designs where the exterior is important and overall mass and create multiple concepts in one model.  Not going to get into the "Revit can do this too" conversation as Sketchup is just faster for concepts and is easier to share.

I have used Chief Architect too... It is like working with ArchiCAD and sketchup at the same time, but only one person can work in the model.  Great for small companies that only need one or two drafters/designers.  CA is awesome though for kitchen and bathroom design as they have loads of manufacturer libraries strictly for that purpose.  So with that in mind, CA is great for contractor/builders that already know what is going into a building and are doing their own designs.
