Precast Column and Panel Modeling

There is a notch in the column where two panels meet with the column, the panels will be pocketed inside the column; the column and panels will be aligned on the exterior.

I know the structure engineer will develop the above details. But how can I model it and the elevation will look right?

Is it possible to create a column family, whenever it meets the wall, it will generate a pocket? What is the best way to model a building with this type of connection?

Can't download the file. It shows failed - no file.

But it is fine. I have tried the divide part on wall. Perhaps because it is new to me, I find it is not very easy to use this tool- have to do it in 3D view and not easy to snap to the object when the wall is above the floor. I think it might be easier to use "wall: Reveal" to create the vertical joint. However I come to know a new tool,  thank you very much for your input.

Try it again.  You might have tried downloading it while I was in the middle of reposting it.

You can divide a part in plan or elevation. In fact, that's the best way to do it in this case.

It looks like you will have to draw 4 sides of the plane to divide the wall.   I like to use plan view so I can make the location accurate, but I can only draw one line, it says nothing is going to be divided.

set your View's Part Visibility to Parts.

I'm not clear what you are saying above.  Just select the Wall and press Create Parts, go to a Plan View, set Parts Visibility to Parts, select the Wall (it's actually a Part now), press Divide Parts, set Gap distance under Properties, press Edit Sketch and draw a single sketch line though the wall at the gap location. Press Finish. That's it. Now go have a beer to celebrate.  😉

Just compared the your sketch line and my sketch line, looks like the sketch line has to extend beyond the wall then it will divide the wall into parts, otherwise, it keeps telling you nothing will be divided.

I don't like that you have to set "show parts" with every views.

1. In what kind of situations, we don't need to show parts if we divide the object?

2. What is show both?

Don't quite understand the concept of parts, is the wall still wall after it is divided and becomes parts?
