Hi everyone

I need to either import or create a .pat file for a Revit model. The .pat file needs to be a gradient to show a circular column in elevation. My process would be to edit the surface pattern, and then use the new .pat file.

How do I create a .pat file, in either Revit or AutoCAD?

My suggestion for this is to create your pattern module within CAD then use this progam (free) to generate the hatch itself using the start and end coordinates for each line in your pattern. It's pretty simple and works well.  remember to define if you are doing a drafting or a model pattern.

I don't believe you can have gradient fill patterns in Revit.

If you are not satisfy with a shaded view of the round columns, you may need to insert a gradient image and overlay on your elevation.

Missed the bit about gradients... yeah, that's not going to work with a .pat file.  ;o)
