Overlapping JPG bad Behavior - Visualization + PDF Export - Possible Bug

We have problems when overlapping JPG images in a sheet family. Two different problems, one while related to visualization order and another related to PDF export.

While editing family and setting 'Draw Layer' to desired background/foreground it looks ok. But once loaded in project image order are reversed.

Also when we exported to PDF images order are also reversed. If you print by other ways or alternate pdf drivers it looks ok, but when using internal Revit PDF export the images are in reverse order.

Checked in Revit 2023 to 2025.

Is there any fix to this behavior?

Try printing Wireframe View and report back results.

I'm pdf exporting / printing a sheet, with these two jpg in the title block family. It's not related to viewports in sheet. Not realated to visual style.

Thanks Barth, but these options are not available neither in title block editor or generic annotation editor. I'm attaching a sample so you all can check.

Ok Autodesk guys there is something deeply wrong with this. I can read post complaining about this for 10 to 15 years ago.

Found some painful 'tricks' that will make it appears right in project but the elements are reversed when pdf export.

Besides the "Draw Layer" being totally ignored even in the same family, no sort option for generic annotation or title block family, you also have a problem with the PDF export option that reverse what you can actually see in the project.

The only real answer here is do not overlap. Which I don't find acceptable at all.

Why don't you create two different different Generic Annotation Families, each with the Images overlapping in a different order. Then nest both these Families into the Titleblock Family and control which one is visible via Visibility Parameters.

Thanks Ralph Barth (sorry!), but I don't think its a good/viable solution. Furthermore when I export top PDF it's reversed, so it's not even what I'm seeing in the screen.

It's not a simple single project problem I could fix by a painful workaround. The real scenario is a project template for a big company, that will be delivered to multiple architectural firms that works for this big company. And one of the images are full inside the other. That image is also project dependent.

So I don't think it's a professional solution/fix we can offer to our client.

I can think a couple different ways, like use only one combined image. But man... I think that a software like Revit should to behave correctly in this simple matter, I really think Autodesk should fix it.

Use PDF files instead of JPG files.

First off; the name's not "Ralph". Second off; I agree with you. If you want to write a strongly-worded letter to Autodesk, I'll co-sign it. Barth Bradley.   😉
