Revit will only deal with these CAD formats -

Take the OBJ and Import it into 3DS Max. From there then you can Export it to DWG. That can then be brought into Revit. The options would be to Link to a Project, Import to a Family and then load into a Project, or Import to a Project. BTW they are listed in order of advisability.

As you can see, this will be a painful process. Is there a reason why you are required to use OBJs?

Do you have FormIt 360?  You can import OBJ in FormIt, save as FormIt file, then Import in Revit.

Hey!

First time poster, VERY new to 3DS MAX and am modelling a layout for a museum - hence the following odd subject matter: a horse skeleton model.

I followed your recommended process to bring this horse skeleton that I downloaded as an OBJ file... I opened it in 3DS MAX, exported it to AutoCAD and then imported it into a new Family in Revit. I was excited that this all seemed to work, but then realised that the model had become triangulated when it was brought into Revit.

Do you know if there is a way to retain the smooth curves?

- I am using 3DS MAX 2019, saving it down to lower version DWG (AutoCAD 2004),

- Opening it in AutoCAD 2017, and then

- Opening it in REVIT 2017

Any tips would be much appreciated! Thanks   : )

Hello @Anonymous! Welcome to the Forum.

Try saving to Autocad 2007 DWG. For some reason, that works better.

Trying to import a drone captured site survey. The OBJ format allows each side of the building to have its own texture.

Using a third application like Formit is a cumbersome way to work, since the design takes place in Revit.

Exporting in DWG loses all the texture mapping references.

Any suggestion for .obj imported directyto Revit?

Maybe OBJ > Navisworks and then NWD > Revit? Not ideal but might be your best option for a laser scanned building.

Hi Chantal,

I was wondering if you would be able to share your horse skeleton RVT file?

I am also working on a project that requires this and it would be a great help if you could!

Thank you

Emily

This is the funniest comment I've ever read on the Autodesk forums. horse_skeleton.rfa

Hello, I am exporting and obj file from 3ds MAX as a dwg but the file that is produced is blank. I have seen this issue mentioned on other forums but with no resolution. The obj file is a meshed cloud file generated from Autodesk's ReCap meshing service - does that matter by chance? I made sure the item was selected when doing the export and I have tried exporting it as an AutoCAD 2013 and 2010 file. Any help would be appreciated. I would like to avoid obj>Navisworks>nwd>Revit as nwds cannot be snapped to/aligned in the same way dwgs can.
