Nested family not locking properly

I created some door families and made a drop-down list for different door handles (which are nested families) using the label parameter. I lock the door knob in place but when I go to change the knob from the drop-down menu, the lock breaks and the knob is no longer flush with the door slab. I've kinda gotten it to work without locking it but I need to be able to lock it into place because when I put the door in different wall assemblies with different thicknesses if it's not locked the knob doesn't move to where it needs to be. 

I did think about having each knob separate instead of double sided (not sure if that changes anything) but I need them to be double sided (as seen in the 2nd screen shot) because I need them to spit out only one code cause they're purchased as a set.

I edited the family and loaded it in to a test project and it works. You want to carefully use the align tool and make sure you pick the "center front-back" plane of the lockset ,which is invisible, by hovering on the backside of trim of the bottom knob. align that to the slab reference plane. You may need to press tab several times and confirm the text in the bottom left of the screen reads the appropriate references.

oh my that was an easy fix lol thank you! I was locking it to the other reference plane in the handle family which wasn't a strong reference like the "center front-back" so that's good to know! thanks so much for your help 🙂
