“Need separate layers for Different objects while exporting sheet/2D to DWG from Revit”

Hello,

Currently we have done models in Revit, looking to export sheet/plan view to DWG for page setup.

We need to assign layers to furnitures, walls, floor, etc. in order to meet layer standards. Since Revit does not have layer concepts, need to export sheet to DWG format.

Please tell us how to fix different layer as shown samples below,

Layer name to be in Auto-CAD                               Objects                Category in Revit

  1. Fixed furniture                                                  Table                     Furniture
  2. Loose furniture                                                 Chair                      Furniture
  3. Split wall                                                              wall                        wall
  4. Interior wall                                                        wall                        wall

Like this, more than 30 layers to be assigned differently. So, please tell us , is this possible and guide me clearly How to do this.

1.Even I tried by creating sub categories and writing layer names as shown in the attached image. I could not get it. 2.Moreover, i tried "Enhanced DWG Exporter". But, it gives layer for category wise & i do not know how to fix it properly. Could someone help me on this?

Thank you in advance.

place the items on separate worksets and use the Layer Modifiers in the export table. Unfortunately there isn't a lot of information out there on using layer modifiers. I use them and they work well for most cases.

I would rather export the Revit as is in DWG, then do a layer translator command in Autocad.

The key to understanding a Revit to Autocad workflow is that Revit Object and Sub-Object categories can be mapped to Autocad Layers. For this to work, your Revit families and Object categories need to to have an equivalent level of detail that is required by your CAD layer standard.

That means that you will need to revisit all your Revit families to ensure that the 3d and 2d elements within are assigned to the correct object categories for this process to be seamless on the Autocad end.

Layer name to be in Auto-CAD                               Objects                Category in Revit

  1. Fixed furniture                                                  Table                     Furniture
  2. Loose furniture                                                 Chair                      Furniture
  3. Split wall                                                              wall                        wall
  4. Interior wall                                                        wall                        wall

Your screen capture of the DWG export layers settings is on the right path.

In the case of the Furniture category, Revit will create an Autocad block for each chair instance (and unfortunately not for each family type) and table instance on layer "I-FURN". Then, in order for the lines of the "Chair" families of Revit family category "Furniture", ALL THE GEOMETRY in the chair family has to belong to the sub category "Chair-01".

In the case of the Wall category, you will be limited to either:

a. the wall function parameter (interior, exterior, foundation, etc) if the view settings is coarse

b. the wall compound structure layers (Finish 5, Finish 4, Thermal/Air Layer 3, etc) of the detail level is medium or high.

For your example, set the view to coarse detail and the export category for Walls | Wall/Interior  to a layer called "Interior wall".

  1. Split wall                                                              wall                        wall
  2. Interior wall                                                        wall                        wall

.Not sure what you mean by "Split wall" and how it differs from an interior wall. I would expect your CAD standards to distinguish along the same lines as the wall function parameters.

Like this, more than 30 layers to be assigned differently. So, please tell us , is this possible and guide me clearly How to do this.

So yes it is possible but requires a fair amount of work to setup.

As to guiding you, you are on the right track, you only need test and revise your export settings and revit families.

1.Even I tried by creating sub categories and writing layer names as shown in the attached image. I could not get it.

As mentioned above, you also need to revise and modify your revit families to assign the geometry to these sub categories.

2.Moreover, i tried "Enhanced DWG Exporter". But, it gives layer for category wise & i do not know how to fix it properly. Could someone help me on this?

Sorry, I haven't used the Enhanced DWG Exporter.

Good luck,

Thank you so much @hmunsell .

Sorry for my late reply. I tried this. But, It fulfills half of my need. Can you please show how do you use & how it will be in acad layer? I need to know how efficient i can use. Thank you.

ill see if i have time to throw together a video on it.... but until then, I would control that with worksets. have one workset for each unique condition (Fixed furniture, Loose furniture, Split wall, Interior wall, etc). place your objects on those worksets as they apply. You can then use the workset as a controlling item for the layer modifier.

set up your workset Modifiers:

  • create your worksets for each condition
  • set the Layer setting to what you want the layer to be
    • ie for for Fixed Furniture,
      • make a workset called Split Wall
      • in the modifiers, set that to "Split"
    • repeat for other worksets.....

Capture 1.JPG

in the export table, pick the ADD/EDIT modifier option

  •  set the layer name to Wall
  • the default category will already be there
    • add the Workset option from the list on the left
    • move it up or down depending on where you want it to appear in the layer name.
      • you may need to experiment to get the right layer name configuration.
  • repeat as needed for other categories. Capture 2.JPG

the exporter will use the Layer name applied to the category "Walls" and add the layer name assigned to the worksets "Split". Based on the example above, you should get a layer in AutoCAD named "Split-Wall".

Thank you for this explanation. This is very useful for me !!

One small negative is time taking one, Is there any other approach easier than this

If its, that would be really helpful.
