Material tag to nested family?

I cannot apply a material tag to a nested family. Is this possible?

I have category and multi tags applied to the nested families, but cannot select a nested family with material tag.

I'd really like to have my ID (interior design) material tags driven from the material itself rather than using a multi-category tag as a work-around. Is this possible?

Solved my confusion. Didn't understand how the material tag works. Doh!

Material tag selects by plane of an element. I need a locked 3d view or a plan/elevation that isn't in wireframe mode.
