material attaching itself to

I've got a material 'PVC' as schedule tag #12.  I just loaded a window trim object and even before I apply a material, when I material tag the trim, it's coming up as #12.  trim HAS NO material associated with it.

how can this be?

actually, got it figured out.  I had to remove the material parameter in the trim and replace it with a new one plus make it by type instead of instance.  but still dont know why it was taking on the PVC.

Hi

Material can be given in four ways in any family..

1. Material within family

2. Material with Type Parameter ( applied in the project, in family type parameter )

3. Material with Instance Parameter ( applied in the project, in instance parameter )

4. Default material of Category ( this gets picked based on category )

After this, theres a combination , if any family is further nested .. Nested family

can be locked to certain materials or using instance parameter... that can be controlled in the 

project after loading..

in your project case.. probably, the material was given in the family file itself..
