I am unable to put any components on my ceiling as it is a linked file.

I tried using copy monitor option in the collaborate ribbon but even that dosent provide an option for ceilings.

Why don't you use face based or work plane based or non-host families instead of ceiling based families for your components?  Don't use the families provided in the Architecture library folders, use the ones in the MEP folders.
