Is there a way to do a host count in a tag for other quantity formulas? Total a number tag label when tagging multiple host floors?

I need to do a group label that shows the quantity of the things tagged. For tagging groups of families, that's easily done with host count.

However, I also need to tag groups of floors and groups of toposolids where the quantity total in the tag shows the total area of all the tagged floors, or the total quantity of a formula that determines the number of perennial or shrub plants. I can do the formulas no problem, but when tagging multiple hosts the forumla displays as <varies>. How can I get the tag to add up the sum of the tagged number formula?

Relying on just the schedule is not enough. It's very standard in landscape architecture to total plants in both the tag and the schedule. Plants on floors are needed because it's not always practical to show 100,000+ tulip bulbs as families in the model, and it's standard to represent these as a hatch. Single labels for every floor is not ideal because the switch between one species and another can be frequent. Tagging multiple in a small area at a time is best for legible tags on a sheet.

I am already accomplishing this by making a static parameter where I run a tool and it figures out the total for all the areas, inputs the total in that parameter and then the tag just reads that total. However, this doesn't automatically update when I adjust the size of a floor. I have to remember to run the tool again to update it. It feels very un-Revit.

I'm hoping there's a workaround to this that I haven't found yet. Something to just total a number tag label instead of showing <varies>.

Thanks,

Amanda

What you describe sounds like a good idea, but since that doesn't exist, couldn't this be achieved by other methods such as labeling each floor by type, and showing a schedule next to the view showing areas by each type, with subtotals? That information will update immediately after you modify the area of the floors.

Alfredo, while that is a method, it's not a common way to label planting plans. It's frequently also stipulated in city planting plan requirements that plants are labeled with individual quantities for approvals. Labeling multiple at once is permitted and helps save time and space. So it's something I need to allow.

Getting hundreds of landscape architecture firms and city staff to fundamentally change how they communicate their design is going to be an uphill battle I don't want to fight.

I'm considering at least having the family plant labels be dynamic and the schedule counts for both families and floors/toposolids also be dynamic with modifications and it's just the floor/toposolid tags that have the labels be static and need manual refreshing after changes. That might be the best option.

Funny how it doesn't have the option for total area and range (min-max) when using multi-tag. I would support that addition to the tagging.
I can only figure out ways around it and I don't like those kind of compromises.

Thank you for your confirmation, ridantuo.

I decided to add it as an idea to the forum. https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/allow-calculation-setting-on-formula-number-and-integer/i...
