Insert beam into a wall

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hello

Let me explain the situation, I have a wall and I want to insert a beam into that wall. I have no problem drawing the beam, but the wall is not cutted, I mean, its volume remains equal as if the beam were not there, it is like the wall and the beam are both in the same space.

So I need, when I insert the beam, the wall volume to be modified (reduced).

Is that possible, if yes, I´d appreciate some help

Thanks!

Hello,

By joining the beam and the wall the volume of the wall is decreased by the volume of the beam. Is this what you mean?

I try that but it didn´t work.

What I am trying to do is insert a beam along a wall.

I want to insert this beam, say, at half height of the wall, so when I insert the beam, I want the beam to split the wall, automatically.

Actually, when I insert the beam in the wall, the wall keeps its volume, so the beam and the wall appear to be in the same space, what I want is that when I insert the beam, the volume amount where the beam splits the wall, this volume to be substracted from de original volume of the wall

The brick wall in the image attached, I want it to be splitted when I insert the intermediate beam

I hope that to be possible, anyway, thanks for answering!

Best regards.

I couldn't cut or join a wall with abeam either.  So I don't know what kind of super power that @JvanReij did to get it to work.

For you particular condition, if you don't want to model separate walls, you can add a horizontal reveal same size as the beam to cut wall.  It would give you a correct volume value.

Yes that reveal is kind of what I want to do, but I want it to be automatically when I add a beam amid the wall.

I thought revit would do it because of the physical principle that two things can´t occupy the same place at the same time, but it seems that revit allows the two things to be in the same place

Thanks!

Hello,

@ToanDN

Yea apparently I got super powers haha, no but seriously it should work. Or am I understanding something wrong in the message from Julio?

Tried some stuff out and both structural as Architectural, different family's as combinations of structural with architectural I can join the beams/columns/walls in all ways and abstract the volumes wit the join tool (see video).

If you want I can have a look though TeamViewer to make it work for you? I've set it up for all our customers also. Toan suggested a nice workaround, but if I understand correctly this will take a lot time when you are working on a bigger project (correct me if I'm wrong).

We (Cadac Group) made a smart library for Revit, mostly dutch users use it, but also very useful for International companies. Most likely we have changed/added some information/parameters in the family to make it work. Working with correct templates, family's and working methods can save you up to 50% of your time.

@JvanReij Got it now.  So when I draw a beam or a column in a wall they automatically join to wall.  All I need to do it switch join order.

Thanks!

Hi.  Tried this with a steel beam, no luck.  Tested it out a bit with various OOTB beams and it appears that this join method only works with Concrete Beams.  And I haven't been able to find any way to join/cut/attach a wall to wood or steel beams.

Any further help with this would be appreciated.

It would be great if joining timber and steel beams with (masonry) walls would be possible as well.
In my opinion joining with walls only seems possible with concrete beams. I can't figure out why this works only for concrete beams. We are talking about joining structural framing with walls, so why not make it possible for all types of structural framing.

Maybe Autodesk can help us out.

Good Stuff!

But do I have to join wall to beam manually for all the walls and  beams?
