If modeling building skin separate, how can windows penetrate both wall systems?

I heard that it is best to model the base wall, for example, a wood stud wall, and then model the plywood/shingles

adjacent to it as a separate wall. Is this a good approach? I can see the benefits as you can then stretch the skin to below the foundation wall or pull down shingles under a soffit.

My question is, if you do this, how can you make a window or door penetrate both layers of the wall?

Join Walls.

...or use a Void Cut  in lieu of an Opening Cut in the Family. Then use Cut Geometry to cut each Wall.  Of course, the Void extrusion needs to be modeled deep enough to penetrate through all the Walls.
