How to have multiple Revit tread materials

I have a stair in which you can see the underside of treads.  Currently, I have the treads material set to wood.  I would like these treads to be made of a metal pan with concrete (e.g. black/silver on the underside) with a wood tile on the top of the tread (e.g. wood look on the top).  Is there a way to model this in revit for the purposes of a rendering?

You can use Paint tool to assign different materials to different faces.

Painting them will work, but if you have a lot of stairs to cover you'll find it takes a lot of time. You could also 'misuse' the nosing profile to add a second profile/material.

For some reason I can't select the treads or risers on the stairs with the paint tool, just the stringers.  Is there some check-box or something somewhere I'm not seeing?

I think you are trying to paint them in plan view. Paint them in 3D.

Nah, I'm attempting to paint in 3D, and I can't tab to select any face on the stairs.  I've followed the instructions on the reference website to the letter, but it acts like the stairs aren't even there.  

Would it be best to upload a gutted model for everyone to see?

Does your stair have open treads? (no riser)  If your doing it as an assembled stair it wont let you paint the treads why this is  i have no idea but if its precast or cast in place it will let you paint it. That's why i was asking if they are open risers. Below is kind of what your trying to achieve but that obviously depends on the risers. Hope this helps!

Alternatively if its a one off stair for the purpose of a visual the you could always model over the top of the stair with generic models to create the metal pan and the timber tread.

Ohhhh.  Yes, I have risers on my stair for egress code, so darn.  I'll just have to work around that.  That seems like a pretty glaring bug! 

That's a good idea using generic model in place to make it look like there is a pan for modeling purposes!  Thanks.

Has anyone had issues with stair treads with painted materials not showing in plan?

Everything works as it should in 3D, but in plan the original stair material shows and tags, not the painted material, see below:

Not possible. But you could orient and lock a 3D View to a plan view and then tag painted tread in that view.
