Generic model line based Void in Curtain Wall Panel Family

Hello,

I am trying to integrate a line based Void into a Curtain Wall Panel but the nested family doesn't cut the panel.
First how I proceeded: I created a plane based family with a cylindrical void, nested it into the line based family so I have a line of cylinders. Then I loaded this family into my panel family so I could cut it. I would like to have a perforated curtain wall panel that I can control with parameters. In every family I checked the box 'cut with void when loaded' but nothing happens.
I have read in some threads that a void family can only cut in the immediate host-family. So I also tested it with a normal extrusion, but the line-family won't even join the curtain wall panel.

Am I missing something or is there an easier way? Please help me understand.

Create a face based void family, cut the solid host with the void, nest it in the panel family then it will cut.

Do you have a photograph of this panel that you are trying to model and make parametric in Revit?  Can you post it?

This would be an example. I would like to control the size and the distance between the cuts and distance from the edge of the panel.

"Cut with Voids when loaded" is intended for when loading into the Model (not family)

IMO, although you would be loosing the parametric options, using a Material with Cutout image would be much better option. If you have too many of these curtain walls/panel, working with Nested/Arrayed voids affect the performance of the model. I wont be a light family... but here are the steps for how to model it

  1. Model one Void in a Face Based
  2. Nest the void from step one into a second Face Based and Array in one Direction (X_Axis)
  3. Nest the Arrayed Family from Step 2 into a Curtain Panel Family
    • Placing it on the face of an extrusion will cut automatically
    • Lock and constrain
    • Array in the Z_Axis Direction
    • Associate parameters between nested components and their hosts

Try the attached sample file and see if you can work it out backwards.

Thank you very much! This finally worked and thanks to your family I could figure it out 🙂
This is a very small project so it's still ok even though the family is quiet complex.
When using materials, I'm never satisfied how it's placed and you don't get the shadow effect unless you render... so I prefer modeling it, if possible.
