Filter Selection Keeps Annotations On

Working in 2015 and 2017.1.1 and noticed that when I attempt to select elevations family through a filter that they do not always go off. Want to only select ones that begin with A, AL, ID, etc so I can turn them off for various disciplines after duplicating views. We have Architecture (A) and Architectural Lighting (AL) which we duplicate a lot of similar views. Instead of manually hiding the elevation family for the discipline we do not want to see, I would like to select it via a filter and then only turn off the AL or A depending on what sheet I am on. If I add a filter and select the family for elevations and turn off their visibility with no other filter selections, then all the elevation families go off. Once I introduce a secondary selection, then only the elevation view goes off leaving the elevation family on. Any recommendations to get the whole elevation tag to go away so that I do not manually hide each one?

in the attached image, the ones that are grayed out should be off completely, but only the view goes off.

How did you setup your filters?  By Sheet number prefix?

I would create a different elevation type for each discipline and use Family and Type criteria to set the filters.  That should work.

I can do it that way, but now that will introduce having to create additional family types which need to be added to templates. Definitely easier to minimize the changes needed to the template as new versions come out every year. I feel the two or three level selection should work out of the box without turning them back on. This will be the same issue with sections and other annotations. We produce Interior Architecture, Architecture, and Lighting out of the same model so we want to have some information on and some off. Once that second option is introduced in the filter it turns objects back on.
