2016 R2 PDF printing issues....

Anonymous

Have been using Adobe Acrobat Pro as my pdf printer for years with no issues.........Now since updating ro R2, having all kinds of issues with pdf's.......

1.  If I've done any editing of anything, the pdf printer just sits there and the progress bar does absolutely nothing.  I am forced to shut down REVIT, Relaunch, reopen Project and start Print reoutine all over again...................Once Pdf pops up for review , the PDF Progress bar consistanly show around 75-80% done, but then nothing..I've waited as long as 15minutes for it to complete.....alas still hangs...........

2. If after completeing one 'print routine in pdf', I try to Immediately start another with different params,  the PDF Progress dialog pops up......then absolutely nothing happens..............have waited as long as 1-hr just to see..nothing...............Have to shut down REVIt, and again relaunch, etc..........

3. Also noticed a new PROCESS runnning now.....Something called "REVIT WORKER.EXE".........wha is this now?????

See attached scrn shot for pdf window...........

@Anonymous I believe that I’ve been able to reproduce this behavior (with original R2 build) and your sample file.

The following steps seem to consistently reproduce a hang up:

  1. Start large print job (complex, raster, shadows, many sheets/views, etc.)
  2. After Revit has sent the jobs to Acrobat, start another print (before the PDF is created).
  3. The Creating Adobe PDF dialog will update to show the new print, but does not finish.

(I get less consistent results if I allow the large print job to fully finish before starting another, but starting another one has reliably hung up Acrobat so far.)

Here is a screenshot of what the hung up window looks like:

 Hung_PDF.png

Closing Revit clears the Creating Adobe PDF dialog and allows printing again.

However, closing the AcroTray (in Task Manager) also closes the Creating Adobe PDF dialog and allows printing again.

Next step is testing with Update 2 for R2.

I am also able to reproduce this behavior after applying Update 2 for R2.

I’ve logged this with our developers, and documented the issue in the following article:

Revit: Creating Adobe PDF dialog gets hung up after loading R2

The article will be updated as our developers proceed with their investigation.

Please let me know if there are any workarounds to be added or changed.

The behavior I was able to reproduce was:

1. Print job is started in Revit.

2. Creating Adobe PDF window opens.

3. Revit finishes sending data to Acrobat (i.e. you can start working in Revit again)

4. PDF creation windows seems to be hung up (PDF may or may not be created).

5. You print to PDF again, and the Creating Adobe PDF window updates with new PDF name, but no progress is made (and PDF is not created).

Is this the behavior everyone else is seeing (or are you seeing Revit is also hung up)?

That sounds about right for the experiences I have had with the issue.  Revit definitely does not get hung up.

Yes, this is still happening.  However, has there been any fixes yet?  Our work around is printing to XPS doc writer then converting to PDF.  Thanks for your help.

Hi,

The solution for this bug is to change in the printing properties where it says: Adobe PDF Output Folder change from: "Prompt for Adobe PDF Filename" to a specific folder location in your PC.

Hope it helps

Regards,

Alessandro

Lance,

Has any progress been made on resolving this issue.  We are still experiencing it.  I have one user that is now experiencing it with the Adobe Acrobat printer and the CutePDF printer.  I have switched him over to the Bluebeam printer and so far it is holding, but our entire office uses the Acrobat PDF printer.  I have people fully patched up on Revit 2016 R2 Update 4.

I checked out the KB article you started and it looks about the same as it did several weeks ago with only work-arounds.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

Change your PDF preferences for "Adobe PDF Output Folder" to "Prompt for Adobe PDF filename".  This seems to help the issue.  It will also speed up the PDF pooling time.  I stilll find that on large sheet sets Acrobat takes a long time to create the PDF.  I have been using CutePDF as a work around.  I have worked with Lance extensively on this issue as well as Adobe.  The techs at Adobe have told me that Acrobat is not compatable with Revit.

Justin,

"Change your PDF preferences for "Adobe PDF Output Folder" to "Prompt for Adobe PDF filename"."

When you said the above quote, did you mean to say change it to "output to a folder" and not "Prompt for Adobe PDF Filename".  Just want to confirm.  We seem to have slightly better results with outputing directly to a folder and not prompting for a filename.  Either way though has random success for us.

I can't believe Adobe said Acrobat is not compatible with Revit.  That is a total copout, meaning they don't want to deal with it.  It's just another nail in the coffin for Acrobat for our organization.  It's just a matter of time/money before we switch our entire firm over to Bluebeam.

Per all the experimentation that has been done on this issue, it was definitely something in the Revit 2016 R2 release that caused the issue.  As it seems Adobe won't do anything about it, I guess our only hope is that Autodesk can fix it in a future patch.

Thanks for your input on the issue.

-Jeff

There seems to be an update 5 for 2016 R2 available- http://up.autodesk.com/2016/RVT/Autodesk_Revit_2016_R2_UPD5_Readme.htm
However the list doesnt address pdf printing.

I am having the same issue with 2016 and also 2017. So after R2, apparently still not resolved in 2017.

I am using the latest Adobe Pro DC (Cloud version/ CC) and Windows 10 pro (not sure if OS also can potentially related)

Hello,

I too was having issues until I did the following:

1.  Upgraded from Adobe Acrobat X to Adobe Acrobat DC (standard)

2.  Upgraded the driver for the Adobe PDF printer through Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Devices and Printers.  After opening the properties dialog box for the printer I clicked on the "Advanced" tab, them "New Driver".  I chose "Adobe PDF Converter Version 11.1.0.0 [2/20/2015].

This seemed to work for me with non-rectangular crop regions.

I have the same problem with both 2016 and 2017, just installed the updates today to r2.  And it is not only with adobe pdf, but with our large format plotter and our 11x17 printer.  So basically with anything where I use the selected views/sheets in the Print Range area.

Is there a way to uninstall these service packs or do I have to reinstall revit again.

Is there an update on this?

Bluebeam works fantastic BTW. But my trial ended.

good morning.  my fix was installing Bluebeam.  it works great.  however, my initial fix was tweaking the properties for adobe and directing the files to be created to one main set directory....

I've always hated Adobe and PDF's altogether. Too bad DWF's never caught on. And Bluebeam has bested them on their own format.

The issue for us was always sporadic in who it effected.  Everyone in our office used Acrobat, but only a handful of people had this issue.  I'm not sure if it had something to do with the Model size, PDF sizes, Acrobat version, or what, but not everyone experienced the problem.  It definitely started after the 2016 R2 update though.

At any rate, our firm had been thinking about switching to Bluebeam for a while due to its superior capabilities for AEC applications so this issue was the final straw and we took the plunge into the BB world.  The issue has been non-existent since.

@Anonymous The following article shows the current status of this issue (and will be updated when there is a change):

PDF output takes a long time or fails; progress bar stops advancing (Adobe PDF printer)
